Janis MacDonald played five seasons of basketball at the University Calgary beginning her career in the fall of 1977 and concluding in 1982. She joined the University of Calgary in the 1977-78 from St. Mary’s High School in Calgary and was a five-year starter.
During her career started for five consecutive seasons, never missing a game. In her era she was the dominant inside player in women’s basketball not only in Canada West but in Canada.
She was a unanimous Canada West Conference first team all-star for four seasons (1979-82), a first team All-Canadian for three seasons and Conference Player of the year twice. Janis was a member of the Canadian National Team for four seasons including the 1980 Olympic Team. Paskevich was winner of the Nan Copp Memorial Trophy as the Canadian Interuniversity Athletic Union (now Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Player of the Year in 1981.
She was a member of the 1979 Conference Championship team and 1980 CIAU bronze medal team.
Janis was the University of Calgary’s Female Athlete of the Year in 1980 and 1981 and also received a Calgary Booster Club Athletic Achievement Award in 1981. She concluded her brilliant five year career with 1458 career points (14.6 points per game) in Canada West regular season play and also had 912 career rebounds in Conference play. When her career ended she was the school’s all-time leading scorer.
On February 20, 1982 Janis Paskevich became the first ever athlete to have a Night in their Honor” by the Athletic Department. She was inducted into the University of Calgary Athletic Hall of Fame on October 12, 1995 and her uniform #15 retired in 2002.
Janis graduated from the University of Calgary with a Bachelor of Physical Education in 1981 and a Diploma in Education.
