CrowchildClassic

The Ultimate Crosstown Smackdown

The ability to determine official bragging rights about which varsity sports program is Calgary's best is a reality for student-athletes from the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University.

The winner of the Crowchild Classic competition is determined annually by the results of the head-to-head clashes between the eight varsity sports teams the two institutions share in common – both men's and women's hockey, soccer, basketball and volleyball.

Launched in fall 2012, the inaugural Crowchild Classic coincided with the first year in which Mount Royal University entered teams in the Canada West conference.

The trophy for the winner of the Crowchild Classic is a cast-iron City of Calgary manhole cover, donated by Trojan Industries, and intended to represent the arterial road (Crowchild Trail) that links the two universities. The winning university keeps the trophy for one year.

Crowchild Classic at the 'Dome

Every year since its inception, the Crowchild Classic has taken a detour to the Scotiabank Saddledome with the National Hockey League’s Calgary Flames hosting a doubleheader in women's and men's hockey between the Dinos and Cougars.

The annual celebration of university sport in Calgary is the largest gathering of students in the city each year. Fans are treated to an outstanding display of hockey, with 11 of the 18 previous games won by just a one-goal margin, including six overtime games. One lucky student from each institution walks away with $5,000 toward their tuition, with plenty of other games and prizes throughout the evening.

The Crowchild Classic holds the attendance record for any game between two U SPORTS teams, set in 2016 when 12,859 screaming fans jammed the Saddledome. The Dinos men have won five of the past six games, including three consecutive double overtime wins from 2016 to 2018. The Calgary women have won three of the last four games at the 'Dome.
