VICTORIA –The University of Victoria Vikes pulled away late for a 3-0 win Sunday at Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field.
The loss leaves the Dinos at 0-5, while Victoria improves to 4-1-1 in conference play.
Goalkeeper Madison Forest turned aside the Vikes' early chances, however, Victoria finally broke through in the 17th minute. Defender Julia Boraston deked a Calgary defender and faked a shot to move Forest off balance before finishing in front of the net to give her side the lead.
The Dinos had their moments after the break to get back into the match. Jenn WIshart's team earned their first dangerous chance on a penalty corner early in the third quarter, and the pressure forced the Vikes to work in their own end. Later in the quarter, Forest made a smart kick save on Camryn Jensen's best look to keep it a 1-0 game.
The decisive stretch came as the third quarter ended and the fourth began. Sadie Lee beat Forest on the stick side in the 45th minute after taking a pass in the slot from Carmen Adrian. Three minutes later, Maeve Connorton, one of the seniors honoured on the day, scored from just inside the 23-metre line to make it 3-0 and take the game away frm the Dinos.
Calgary return to action Saturday, Oct. 17 at 11 a.m. when they travel to face the UBC Thunderbirds. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel. Victoria will travel to face UBC on Saturday, Oct. 24.
