Dinos stay close but fall 1-0 to UBC

VANCOUVER – The University of Calgary Dinos women's field hockey team's search for an equalizing goal were stunted as the UBC Thunderbirds held on for a 1-0 win on Saturday morning at Wright Field.

The result leaves Calgary at 0-7 on the season. UBC increased to 4-0-1.

Neither team created a quality chance in the early first period. The deadlock broke in the opening minutes of the second quarter, when Gursukhmani Basra finished a series of passes with an in-tight shot in the 17th minute.

UBC nearly doubled its lead soon after, coming out of a penalty corner with a strong look, but Dinos goalkeeper Madison Forest made a sprawling save to keep it a one-goal game. Calgary's defence held the line through the second half.

UBC earned a pair of penalty corners early in the fourth quarter, and the Dinos were equal to both. The Calgary defence leaped out to make a diving block on the first, and the team closed the gaps to shut down the second.

With time running down, the Dinos pulled their goalkeeper in search of a late push to get on the scoreboard, but UBC held on for the shutout.

The Dinos will return to action Sunday, Oct. 18 when they travel to face the Thunderbirds at Wright Field at 11 a.m. The game can be seen live on Canada West TV powered by BioSteel.
