VICTORIA – The University of Calgary Dinos women's field hockey team fell 3-1 to the University of Victoria Vikes on Saturday at Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field.
The loss drops Calgary to 0-5 on the season, while Victoria improves to 3-1-1.
The Vikes came out fast, scoring twice in the first six minutes. Antonia Hodar's shot in the fifth minute was stopped by Dinos goalkeeper
Madison Forest, but Sadie Lee pounced on the rebound to open the scoring. A minute later, Josie Dunham, fresh off the bench, ripped a shot past Forest for her first goal of the year, putting Victoria up 2-0 early.
Dunham continued to test Forest with several shots to open the second quarter, but the Dinos goalkeeper made a string of big saves to keep the deficit at two. Victoria had a goal waved off before Hodar added her second of the season in the 27th minute, corralling a loose ball in front of the net to make it 3-0 at the half.
Forest kept the margin from growing further as Victoria continued to generate chances, and Calgary began to find its offensive rhythm in the fourth quarter.
Hannah Doman capped a well-executed passing play deep in the Vikes' end to pull the Dinos within two in the 49th minute, but Calgary couldn't find a second before time ran out on the 3-1 result.
The Dinos will return to action Sunday, Oct. 4 at 10 a.m. MT when they face the Vikes again at Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field in a rematch to close out the season series.
