VICTORIA – The University of Victoria Vikes picked up a 5-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos field hockey team at Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Vikes were the first on the board, seeing a fifth minute goal via penalty corner from Sadie Lee and a 12th minute goal from Ava Winter on a penalty stroke to take a 2-0 lead over the Dinos after the first quarter of play.

Three minutes into the second quarter, Dinos goaltender Madison Forest made a sliding save to stop the Vikes' attack and keep the Vikes advantage to two goals. Calgary's defence, backed by strong play from Forest, kept the Vikes attack contained early in the second quarter.

However, the Vikes would break through the Dinos' defensive pressure with under two minutes to go in the quarter, with Amanda Adams finding space in front of the net to score and give the Vikes a 3-0 advantage at halftime.

Out of the break, Maddie Hunter recorded her first goal as a Vike, collecting her own rebound and finishing past Forest to for the 4-0 Victoria lead in the 34th minute. 

Undeterred, Calgary responded with sustained pressure, generating a long corner opportunity led by Molly Garnham. The Dinos then saw their first penalty corner near the halfway point of the third quarter, highlighted by another shot by Garnham. However, the Vikes' defence was able to clear the Dinos' attack and the game remained 4-0 in favour of Victoria at the end of the third.

The Dinos came out pressing to start the final frame, but the Vikes struck again in the 51st minute, with Adams setting up Jaden Dawson, who converted to push the Vikes' lead to 5-0. 

A good stop in the Dinos' end by Macie Stevenson kept the Vikes attack on their heels, but the Victoria defence was able to stifle Calgary's scoring attempt.

Calgary continued to test the UVic defence for the remainder of the fourth, adding another big stop from Forest in the final seconds to close out the game. However, the Vikes came away with the 5-0 win.

The Vikes and Dinos will match up for the final time in 2025 on Sunday at 12 p.m. MT at Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field.
