CALGARY – The Victoria Vikes completed their weekend sweep with a 3-0 triumph over the University of Calgary Dinos women's field hockey team Sunday afternoon at Hawkings Field.

The game carried extra significance for the Dinos, as it marked Seniors' Night for their lone graduate, Julia McDermott.

"There's definitely some emotions. I think today was a super good game and we really put a lot of the things we've been working on together, so I think it's something we can all be proud of and it's a great way to end off my time here," said McDermott.

"It's definitely been a different five years. We've had a lot of changes as a team, and I feel like I've seen the program go through a lot of things, but it's super cool to see where we're at now and the future of the program. It makes me really proud to be a Dino. I think there are a lot of good things ahead for the group. We have such a young team this year that they're going to do super cool things in the next couple of years."

In contrast to Saturday's match, the Vikes wasted no time getting on the scoresheet, striking six minutes into the first quarter. A give-and-go rush up the pitch slipped past Dinos starting goalkeeper Micaela Camacho to open the scoring.

The visitors continued to push in the second quarter, but Camacho kept her team close with several big saves, including a sliding block to deny the Vikes offence. In the 25th minute, defender Libby Hogg finally broke through, scoring her third goal of the weekend to double the lead. Just minutes later, Molly Harris tipped in a penalty corner for the third and final goal of the match.

"The second half was some of the best hockey we've put together so far as we continue to grow," said Dinos head coach Jenn Beagan. "They're trusting the process, which is important, and we're making some great growth from game to game and from week to week, so I'm really proud of what they put on the field today."

The second half saw chances at both ends, but neither team capitalized. Calgary substitute goalkeeper Madison Forest made several strong saves, while Vikes goalkeeper Anais Chace turned aside the Dinos' best look from inside the circle.

"They're learning and they're learning very quickly, and it's just some massive growth," Beagan added. "You can teach them tactics in training, and you can teach them tactics in test matches, but there's nothing like doing it at speed and under pressure against outstanding teams. When you put them under pressure and ask them to make decisions under pressure and at speed, it's different."

The Dinos now head into a bye week, which Beagan sees as another chance for growth before their first road trip, Sept. 27–28.

"We'll play a men's team next week, which will be good. We'll still get a chance to practice, train, and make some adjustments in our play, which is great. For our away games, we just stick with our game plan. We have a set of principles that we play to, and we can stay with our game and stay focused on our game—it doesn't really matter what field we play on."

The Vikes will visit the UBC Thunderbirds on Sept. 20–21.
