WINDSOR, Ont. – It was the
Sienna MacDonald show in Day 2 at the 2025 U SPORTS Track & Field Championships Friday inside the Dennis Fairall Fieldhouse.
MacDonald not only claimed a pair of national championships – the fourth and fifth of her career – but she also toppled a pair of U SPORTS records in the process.
Powered by MacDonald's remarkable day, the Dinos sit in fourth place in the women's team standings with 35 points through 11 of the 17 events. Western leads with 78 points, followed by Guelph (61) and Saskatchewan (48).
On the men's side, Calgary finished Day 2 with six points for 15th place. The Mustangs also lead on the men's side with xx points.
The record-breaking day for MacDonald started in the 60m hurdle prelims, breezing to the top opening time of 8.09 seconds to smash the previous U SPORTS record of 8.15 set by Saskatchewan's Michelle Harrison back in 2020. McDonald then destroyed her own record in finals with a blazing time of 7.99 – the second consecutive national title in the event for the fourth year from Airdrie, Alta.
Less than half an hour after taking down the U SPORTS hurdle record, MacDonald was at it again. She climbed into second in long jump with a leap of 6.13 in the opening round before flying for a new PB jump of 6.25m on her final approach. That mark not only won MacDonald her second national title in roughly 30 minutes time, it also took down the U SPORTS record of 6.24m previously set by Jocelyn Adu-Gyamfi of Toronto back in 2001.
Both marks are also new Dinos program records.
The next medal came in the men's high jump.
Noel Vanderzee – the defending U SPORTS champion and two-time Canada West champ – soared over the bar at 2.12m on his third attempt only to just clip it on his way down and see it rattle off. Vanderzee's closing height of 2.09m tied him for second on the day, bringing home the bronze medal.
Georgia Oland once again showed off her speed Friday. One day after taking fourth in the 60m, the third-year sprinter finished third in her timed-final heat and fifth overall in the 300m with a time of 38.45 for more points for the Dinos.
Also competing on the day, rookie
Matthew Minchin continued his late-season push and finished ninth overall in weight throw with an impressive toss of 16.30m.
Natasha Gatzke closed out her strong hurdle career in the Scarlet & Gold by finishing ninth at nationals in 8.54 seconds.
Aly Edwards capped her remarkable U SPORTS career by earning a spot in shot put, finishing 12th overall at 11.28m.
Closing out Day 2 was the 4x800m relay. Both the women's squad of
Amaia Ervin-Arambarri,
Tatum Wade,
Lauren Westlake and
Csenia Irvin (9:13.22) and the men's foursome of
Ethan Meyer,
Max Cook,
Kai Deausy and
Phoenix Bouma (7:45.75) came in 11th overall.
The third and final day of action from this year's national championships gets underway at 10:30 a.m. MT.
