CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos field hockey team dropped their second straight game against the Victoria Vikes, 6-0, on Sunday afternoon at Hawkings Field.
The Vikes started the game off strongly once again. They potted three goals within the first quarter, led by Anikka Kleinschmidt, who opened the scoring six minutes into the game off a penalty corner. Victoria added to the lead by getting goals from Amanda Adams and Chloe Langkammer at the 13-minute and 14-minute mark, respectively.
Madeline Mittelsteadt's goal in the 30th minute made it a 4-0 game at halftime.
The Dinos tightened up defensively as the game progressed.
"We had a good chat at halftime," explained Calgary head coach
Jenn Beagan. "I thought during the second half, they came out much better and more prepared to play our game, and they did some great things in our defensive phase in the second half, which we'll be able to grow next week."
During the second half, Calgary did a much better job of defending, giving the Vikes less room to work with. Victoria recorded goals in the third and fourth quarters, by Josie Dunham and Sadie Lee, as Calgary limited more of their offensive chances.
"It's just about keeping them focused on our game plan and not so much on the score clock," stated Beagan. "As long as we can keep them focused on what they're learning or trying to execute on the field, it's a win for us."
The Dinos will look to bounce back with home games next weekend versus the UBC Thunderbirds, Sept. 14-15.
The Vikes head into a bye and will return to the field on Sept. 21 for a matchup against the T-Birds.
