Road trip continues with Friday night showdown in Saskatoon

CALGARY – Following a big road win over Alberta in Week 2, the Dinos football team stays on the road for a Week 3 showdown with Saskatchewan.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday night from Griffiths Stadium in Saskatoon.

HEADLINES
  • Calgary overcame an early nine-point deficit in Edmonton last week, scoring three defensive touchdowns for a convincing 36-22 win over previously fifth-ranked Alberta.
  • The Huskies are off to a surprising 0-2 start to the season after falling to Manitoba (37-24) and Regina (33-28) in the first two weeks. Both losses have come on the road, with Friday's game against Calgary marking Saskatchewan's first home game of the 2024 season and will serve as the team's Homecoming game.
  • The Dinos and Huskies squared off twice last season. Saskatchewan claimed a 28-12 road win back in late September before Calgary returned the favor with a 13-12 win in Griffiths Stadium one month later. The Dinos defence was impressive in both of those contests, collecting a combined seven interceptions (four in Calgary, three in Saskatchewan) in those matchups.
  • Calgary's Week 7 win last season snapped a four-game losing skid in the long-standing rivalry with Saskatchewan. The two teams are split down the middle in their last 10 conference meetings, with the road team winning three of the last four.

Calgary Dinos (1-1)
Next week: vs. Manitoba
  • It was another impressive defensive performance by the Dinos last time out, turning Alberta over an incredible eight times overall. Four of those turnovers came as interceptions, with Calgary turning defence into offence and returning three of those for touchdowns.
  • Nate Beauchemin had two of those pick-sixes for the Dinos, racking up a combined 148 return yards in the process. Beauchemin - who now has three pick-sixes in his career - now holds the program record for single season INT return yardage, doing so before halftime of last week's win.
  • Fourth-year kicker Vince Triumbari also had quite the night in Edmonton last week, scoring 18 points on three extra points and a perfect 5-for-5 showing on field goals, connecting from 41, 26, 18, 31 and 25 yards.
  • The Dinos finally return home next weekend as they get set to host league-leading Manitoba for a Saturday matinee, with kickoff set for 2 p.m. from McMahon Stadium.

Saskatchewan Huskies (0-2)
Next week: at UBC
  • Saskatchewan dropped the first of their two U-Prairie Challenge contests of the season to Regina last time out. It was a back-and-forth affair in the first half inside Mosaic Stadium. The Huskies scored 21 points in the second quarter to hold a 28-22 lead at the half but were shutout over the final 30 minutes for a 33-28 loss.
  • The start is surprising, as the Huskies have gotten out of the gates strong each of the past few years and are now 0-2 in conference play for just the third time since 2002.
  • In his second season under center, starting QB Anton Amundrun has a Canada West-leading 591 passing yards and four TDs, connecting on just over 67 percent (51-76) of his attempts.
  • Up next, the Huskies play their third road game in the first half of the season, traveling to Vancouver for their lone showdown with UBC this season.
