Five Dinos selected in CFL Draft

CALGARY – Five members of the University of Calgary Dinos football team were selected Tuesday night during the 2026 Canadian CFL Draft.

Brayden Szeman, Osasere Odemwingie, Matt Sibley, Ben Dobson and Chris Pashula all heard their names called in an exciting night for all.

"We are all happy for our guys that got picked," Dinos head coach Ryan Sheahan said. "What a great moment for those young men and their families. We are so happy we could be a part of their journey as football players.

"Our program is one that strives to develop the best people and players. Our goals are to be the best team in the nation. Accolades and draft picks are byproducts of doing the right things the right way as much as possible. We recruit players that care deeply about the game and being good at it. So, to see dreams come true for some of our guys tonight was pretty special."

Szeman was the first Dino off the board, being selected by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats with the fifth pick of the fourth round as the 34th overall pick this year. The Vernon, B.C. product has been the model of consistency, starting all eight games each of the last four years at centre.

The next Calgary player off the board was Odemwingie. A 6-foot-3, 230-pound linebacker that came to the Dinos from Notre Dame High School was selected by the Saskatchewan Roughriders with the 38th overall pick. Odemwingie led the Dinos' standout defence in tackles in two of the past three seasons, racking up 161 total tackles over his four-year career, to go with four sacks, 10.5 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries.

Three picks later it was another hard-hitting linebacker as Dobson was taken with the 41st overall pick by Ottawa. The fourth-year from nearby Cochrane, Alta., has tallied 91 total tackles in 27 games played, with five TFL's and 1.5 sacks. He also has a pair of forced fumbles and recoveries, as well as seven recorded pass breakups.

Again it was just three picks later when the next member of the Dinos family was taken, with Sibley being reeled in by his hometown team as the Stampeders chose the receiver with the 44th selection. Sibley – who grew up in Calgary and went to Ernest Manning High School – has 105 total catches in 28 games in the Scarlet & Gold. He was the team's leading receiver this year with 506 yards in six games, now sitting at 1302 yards and seven total touchdowns over his four years. The sure-handed receiver also has plenty of experience on special teams on both kick and punt returns.

The second member of Calgary's offensive line was next as Pashula heard his name called with the 50th pick overall by the Edmonton Elks. Pashula is a versatile lineman who has played multiple spots up front over his four years on campus. A Calgary native who graduated from St. Francis High School, Pashula made 19 total starts in his four years as a Dino.

Additionally, former Dino Ben Britton was also drafted Tuesday night. The receiver was selected one pick after Pashula by Winnipeg.

This becomes the 25th consecutive year the Dinos have had at least one player selected in the CFL Draft, with the total number of draftees from the program now totalling 176 over that span following Tuesday's results.
