POINTE-CLAIRE, Que. – The University of Calgary Dinos swim teams were able to carry their momentum through the second night of the U SPORTS National Swimming Championships, adding six more medals to their haul.
After completing more than half of the program, the Dinos men have moved up the team standings into second place behind Toronto, while the women maintain third heading into the final day of competition.
In the first championship final of the evening,
Julianne Moore stunned the field when she touched for silver behind Toronto's defending U SPORTS champion Ainsley McMurray in the women's 50 freestyle. After finishing 17th at last year's national championship with a time of 26.86, second-year Moore dropped a huge new personal best time of 26.14 to claim her first individual U SPORTS hardware.
"I am super proud of the swim," Moore reflected after winning her first U SPORTS medal. Ranked 13th leading up to the meet, the second-year from Salmon Arm, B.C. exceeded even her own expectations. "My goal was to just qualify for the A final, so this is a major, major improvement."
"I have gotten more serious into racing over the last year. I've been hitting the weight room and I feel good in the water. It was incredible when I touched the wall and saw I had a huge best time and my teammates were all cheering for me."
Following Moore's impressive opening to the night,
Alexanne Lepage was able to pick up her third medal of the weekend when she dealt a definitive win in the women's 200 breaststroke, touching in 2:27.92, just over three seconds ahead of Western's Shona Branton.
After failing to make the A final at last year's championships,
Nathan Versluys had something to prove when he dove in for the men's 400 freestyle. Despite splitting a blistering 59.67 through the final 100 meters, the fourth-year Dino couldn't hold off UBC's Liam Clawson-Honeyman, settling for silver behind the Thunderbird in a new lifetime best of 3:58.43.
Both
Charlie Skalenda and senior
Richie Stokes were able to repeat their 2023 medal-winning performances on the second night of action. In the men's 200 IM, Skalenda held off Toronto's Jacob Gallant for silver, while Stokes races home for bronze in the men's 100 backstroke.
The women's 800 freestyle relay team of Lepage,
Marit Anderson,
Hannah Johnsen and
Emily De Jager added the sixth medal for the Dinos on night two, touching for silver behind the Thunderbirds.
Racing wraps up Saturday with the preliminaries at 7:30 a.m. MT, and the finals scheduled to begin at 3:30 p.m. MT.
