Dinos swimming shines in Toronto

TORONTO – The University of Calgary Dinos swim team put together yet another strong showing at the UT Quad Friday inside the Varsity Pool on the University of Toronto campus.

Swimming against the host Varsity Blues, Western Mustangs and Quebec All-Stars, the Dinos touched the wall first an impressive 14 times in a unique meet against some of the best swimmers in the nation.

Friday's meet featured two unique elements. The first was "jackpotting," where the swimmer winning an event earned nine points for their team in the standings and if they beat other swimmers by a designated amount of time, they would earn that swimmers' points for their team. The second element were called "skins events," where two swimmers would be eliminated from the race until two teams were left standing - earning points all along the way.

Calgary and Toronto were neck and neck the entire meet, with the Varsity Blues pulling away late to take first with 830 points. The Dinos finished second overall with 631 points, while the Quebec All-Stars (335 points) finished third and Western (272 points) was fourth.

Alexanne Lepage was once again dominant for the Dinos, picking up individual wins in the 50, 100 & 200 breaststroke, as well as the 200 IM. She also claimed wins in skins swims in the 50 freestyle, 50 breast and 50 butterfly.

Nicholas Duncan also had a huge performance on the big stage. The second-year from Calgary earned wins in the 50 fly and 100 breast, as well as three skins events in the 50 free, 50 fly and 50 breast.

Stephen Moore topped the field in the 50 breaststroke with a winning time of 28.49 to just out touch the top UT swimmer, while Ian Cameron also had a nailbiter of a win in the men's 100 IM in 55.25.

The Dinos men's 3x50 relay team of Thomas McDonald, Cameron and Duncan also picked up a win in the unique event in the skins event. McDonald also had a pair of runner-up finishes in individual events, taking second in both the 50 and 100 butterfly, while rookie Rosie Housman earned a silver medal in the women's 200 backstroke.

Calgary now returns home to host the annual College's Cup - Mountain this Friday inside the UCalgary Aquatic Centre. Swimming is scheduled to start at 4:30 p.m.
