VICTORIA – The weekend field hockey series between the University of Victoria and University of Calgary opened with the Vikes claiming a 7-0 victory over the Dinos at Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field Saturday morning.

The Vikes improve to 3-0-2 on the year with the win, while the Dinos fall to 0-7-0.

Though Victoria went on the offensive early on, Calgary goalkeeper Alana Madrid kept her side in the game, making two saves in the eighth and ninth minutes to keep the score at 0-0. However, the Vikes would break through two minutes later, with Antonia Diuana Hodar scoring for the 1-0 Vikes lead. Chloe Langkammer struck for the Vikes in the 13th minute to give the home side a 2-0 lead after the first quarter of play.

Following a Vikes corner in the second period, the Dinos defence was able to clear the ball out, leading to Hannah Doman going on a run and getting into Calgary's attacking half. Though the Dinos made a push towards the circle, the Vikes were able to prevent an attack. With Victoria adding two more goals in the second quarter, the Vikes held a 4-0 lead at halftime. 

The Dinos penalty corner defence held strong through the third quarter, keeping the Vikes out of the net on corner opportunities. UVic was able to add two field goals in the 37th and 42nd minutes to hold a 6-0 lead after 45 minutes of play.

Calgary conceded just one goal in the fourth quarter, bringing the final score to 7-0 in favour of the Vikes.

The Dinos and Vikes rematch Sunday, Oct. 6 at noon MT.
