Dinos claim point with Johnson buzzer beater

CALGARY – Elisa Johnson scored the first goal of the season for the University of Calgary Dinos field hockey team as they earned a point in a shootout loss to the University of Victoria Vikes.

Tied 1-1 through 60 minutes of play, the Dinos went to their second shootout of the year on Saturday at Hawkings Field. The Vikes shooters were clinical, scoring on three consecutive chances, while goalkeeper Anais Chace made a trio of saves to deny the home team a victory.

"I am super proud of them. We have come a long way where we can compete against the two best teams in the country who are in our conference," said Dinos head coach Jenn Swagar, whose team was outscored by the Vikes last season 33-0 in four games. "We can hold the play, we have possession of the ball, we have the skill and speed."

Neither team was able to break through during a scoreless opening half. Victoria netted the first goal of the game in the 40th minute as their offence closed in on goal and Amanda Adams beat Calgary goalkeeper Alana Madrid to the right side.

The Dinos offence mounted pressure late in the fourth quarter, looking to pull even, and were rewarded with three short corners. After being turned away on their first two chances, the Calgary attack got one last opportunity with time expired and made the most of it.

Maisie Hastings delivered the ball and it was sent towards the net by Madison Gaffney where Johnson got a piece and deflect the shot by the Vikes goalkeeper.

"When you play a short corner you play the odds. We practice that one, it is one of our favourites and I am glad they executed it," mentioned Swagar.

Melanie Robertson, Nora Struchtrup, and Madeline Mittelsteadt each scored in the shootout to secure a pivotal extra point for Victoria.

The Dinos will host the Vikes on Sunday, Sept. 17 in their final home game of the season. The action gets underway at 11 a.m. at Hawkings Field.
