CALGARY – The UBC Thunderbirds picked up a full three points on Sunday with a 1-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos field hockey team at Hawkings Field.
Needing a shootout on Saturday to decide a 0-0 game, the Thunderbirds were able to find the back of the net in regulation to begin the season with a pair of road wins.
The Dinos struggled to generate offence in the tightly contested second matchup. The team ran into discipline problems with five cards handed out and could not create the same attack they had in the opener.
"Our basics were a little bit weaker today. We didn't receive the ball or execute on things and there were a couple of bad bounces," said Dinos bench boss
Jenn Swagar. "I am proud that they brought effort. We showed up and had chances, but we didn't execute."
Calgary's defensive corner unit was tested seven times throughout the day and was able to keep the UBC offence at bay until the second half.
Birkley Anderson scored the first goal of the weekend five minutes into the third quarter. After UBC earned a penalty stroke, Anderson was given the assignment and barely beat the right pad of Dinos goalkeeper
Alana Madrid to go ahead on the scoreboard.
Hannah Rumble picked up her second clean sheet of the weekend going the distance in the UBC net.
The Dinos wrap up the home portion of their Canada West campaign next weekend when they host the Victoria Vikes, Sept. 16-17.
UBC goes into a bye next weekend before hosting the Vikes in their home opener, Sept. 23-24.
