CALGARY – The No. 1 University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team will gear up for some semifinal playoff action against the Saskatchewan Huskies this week at Father David Bauer Arena.
Thursday and Friday's games will start at 7 p.m. and, if needed, the puck will also drop at 7 p.m. on Saturday. Tickets are available at GoDinos.com/buytickets.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. GOING STREAKING – The Dinos have had a historic season, not only collecting 25 wins, conceding just three losses, and earning a total of 50 points to sit atop the Canada West standings – they also set a record for the longest winning streak with 23 wins in the regular season. Notably, they even topped the record in a monumental fashion at the Crowchild Classic held at the Scotiabank Saddledome in front of 11,000-plus fans where they won their 18th game in a row.
2. HEAD-TO-HEAD – The Dinos went 3-1 against the Huskies during the regular season but it was far from a lopsided season series. The last time these two teams met for a weekend matchup, Calgary got the sweep, but both games went into double overtime in Saskatoon. Moreover, the Huskies own one of the three wins against the Dinos all season, posting a 3-1 victory in Father David Bauer Arena back in early October in the Dinos' home opener.
3. PLAYOFF REMATCH – Calgary and Saskatchewan are certainly no strangers when it comes to playoff hockey. The two programs have squared off four times in the last six postseasons – all of which took place in Saskatoon. Last year, the two teams met in the quarter-final, where Calgary won the series 2-1, with current Dino
Max Patterson netting the Game 3 winner with less than four minutes in regulation. The last time the Huskies came to Calgary for a postseason series was back in 2011, where the Dinos won the semifinal series, 2-1.
4. ALL STAR NODS – Calgary's
Noah King,
Carl Tetachuk, and
Riley Stotts have been honoured with being named Canada West First Team All-Stars, and Tetachuk also got a spot on the all-rookie squad. Saskatchewan's Connor Hobbs was also named a First Team All-Star and teammate Jared Dmytriw was called a second-teamer.
5. DOMINATING DINOS – It is no surprise that some of Calgary's all-stars have been putting up some high stats. Stotts ranks third in the country in assists, collecting 26. Tetachuk has the best winning percentage in the country with 0.889. But even those not named to all-star teams have been ranking high.
Sean Strange has the fourth-best plus/minus in the country with a +27 and
Jake Gricius is ranked sixth in the conference for goals, finishing the puck a total of 15 times, including seven power-play goals, also giving him the top spot in the conference on the man advantage.
