CALGARY – Coming off a successful Crowchild Classic weekend that saw the No. 1 University of Calgary Dinos men's hockey team (21-3-0) sweep the No. 5 Mount Royal Cougars and push the team's win streak to 19 games in a row, the Dinos will now face off with the Manitoba Bisons (8-16-0) with a pair of home games this weekend.
Calgary will make their return to Father David Bauer Arena to host a weekend double against the Bisons, with puck drop at 7 p.m. on Friday and 3 p.m., Saturday. Ahead of Saturday's game, the Dinos will honour graduating student-athletes
Brendan De Jong,
Bradley Schoonbaert, and
Jordan Xavier. Both games will be streamed live on Canada West TV.
FIVE THINGS TO KNOW
1. MAKING HISTORY – The Dinos have been unstoppable for the majority of the 2022-23 season and aren't letting up, heading into the weekend with an astonishing 19-game win streak. The Calgary squad eclipsed the previous Canada West record of 17 consecutive wins, originally set by the Alberta Golden Bears during the 1978-79 season, with their 18th and 19th victories against their crosstown rival Mount Royal. The Dinos outscored the Cougars 4-2 and 4-0 in their weekend double, which included a marquee matchup at the Scotiabank Saddledome in front of more than 11,000 supporters.
2. GOLDEN GOALIE – First-year netminder
Carl Tetachuk has impressed for Calgary throughout the season. Tetachuk currently ranks first in CW for wins (15) and shutouts (three). With a save percentage of 0.912%, Tetachuk currently sits second among goalies in the conference.
3. BEAT THE BISONS – The Dinos will look to extend their win streak against the Bisons after picking up the weekend double back in November when they faced off against the Manitoba team in Winnipeg. The Dinos were dominant over the Manitoba, winning 8-2 and 4-2 in their weekend clashes.
4. PICKIN' UP THE POINTS – The Bisons defeated the Trinity Western Spartans last weekend after a marathon game saw Manitoba's Devon Skoleski score the game-winner, pushing the Bisons past the Spartans for a 7-6 victory. Skoleski has racked up 26 points this season and sits second behind teammate Brett Davis with a total of 29 points in 11 goals and 18 assists. On the Dinos front,
Riley Stotts leads with 32 points with seven goals and an impressive 25 assists.
5. NOTABLE ACHIEVEMENT – Dinos team captain
Noah King and head coach
Mark Howell returned golden from the FISU World University Games in Lake Placid, NY after Canada won their first FISU gold in the men's hockey tournament since 2013.
