CALGARY - The 2019 University of Calgary Dinos Vanier Cup Championship team will be well represented in Sunday's 2023 110th Grey Cup at Tim Horton's Field in Hamilton, Ont.
Receiver
Tyson Philpot, last year's Canadian Football League runner-up for Rookie of the Year, is an integral part of Montreal's receiving core for quarterback Cody Fajardo. Philpot was a vital piece for the Dinos offensive unit on their 2019 Vanier Cup championship team.
Jeshrun Antwi, now in his third season with the Alouettes, is a running back as well as a solid special team player. Antwi had the misfortune of missing the latter part of the 2019 championship run, including the Vanier Cup game, but was a key player on and off the field and one of the team leaders.
What many people do not know is the role receiver and special team player
Jake Harty played with the 2019 Vanier Cup team. Harty started his professional career as the No. 10 pick by Ottawa in the 2015 CFL Draft. By 2019, he was a member of the Saskatchewan Roughriders, but was sidelined for two seasons due to a career-threatening knee injury. Plus, with no football in 2020 due to the COVID 19 pandemic, Harty essentially missed three years of football.
What did Harty do in 2019? While rehabbing his injury he returned to the University of Calgary, completing his degree requirements. He combined his academic pursuits and helped coach receivers with
Jabari Arthur. One of his players he helped coach was current Montreal teammate
Tyson Philpot.
Harty, Philpot and Antwi were all in Quebec City when the Dinos claimed their fifth Vanier Cup in 2019, defeating the University of Montreal Carabins - each receiving a Vanier Cup ring. The trio is hoping to add a Grey Cup ring to their jewelry collection Sunday. If Montreal wins, Harty will get his second Grey Cup ring. He secured his first in 2016 with the Ottawa Red Blacks when they defeated Calgary, 39-33.
What is unique is what could happen is in the next paragraph!
When the Alouettes defeated the Hamilton Tiger Cats 27-12 in the CFL Eastern semifinal, Harty made a significant contribution - scoring the key touchdown late in the game. A week later, Antwi put the ball in the end zone for Montreal in their 38-17 win over the heavily favored Toronto Argonauts. Now, if Philpot can record a touchdown in the Grey Cup game against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, three different former Dinos will have scored touchdowns in three different weekends against three different opponents in three different CFL playoff games in 2023.
Incredibly unique if it should happen!
