VICTORIA – The University of Victoria women's field hockey team shutout the University of Calgary for the second-straight game, claiming a 5-0 win over the Dinos from the UVic Field Hockey Turf.
The Vikes improve to 3-1-2 with the win, while the Dinos move to 2-2-2 with the setback.
Leading the way for Victoria was Libby Hogg, who tallied two goals, including the game-winner.
Alana Madrid played all 60 minutes in goal for Calgary.
Hogg put the Vikes on the board, scoring goals in the third and 24th minutes. Both were on penalty corner opportunities, giving Victoria a 2-0 lead.
Adding one more goal before the end of the first half, Madeline Mittelsteadt netted the goal in the 28th minute to put the Vikes ahead, 3-0. Despite spending some time in the circle during the second quarter, the Dinos were unable to find a response through the first 30 minutes of play.
The first play of the second half featured Amanda Adams rushing in with the ball, taking it all the way for the Vikes' fourth goal of the game in the 31st minute. Nearly adding another to their lead during the third quarter during a penalty corner, Madrid used her stick to make the save to keep the game at 4-0 in favour of UVic after three quarters.
The final goal of the day was scored by Nora Struchtrup in the 41st minute, finalizing the score at 5-0 for the Vikes.
Next up, the Dinos head to UBC for a pair of games, Oct. 14-15, while the Vikes return to action Oct. 21-22 against the Thunderbirds.
