TORONTO – The University of Calgary Dino's men's and women's swim teams came up short in their dual in the pool with the University of Toronto Saturday at Toronto's Varsity Pool.
The No. 3 nationally-ranked Calgary women fell to the No. 2 Blues 58-89, while the No. 2 Dinos men were upset by the No. 3 Toronto team 70-81.
The Dinos women were led by second-year
Hannah Johnsen, who touched first to win the women's 50 (28.78) and 200 backstroke (2:11.59), and picked up 11 points for the Scarlet & Gold.
Emily De Jager touched win in the women's 400 freestyle, touching in a new personal best time of 4:15.99, two and a half seconds clear of the pack, while teammate
Marit Anderson hit the wall first in the women's 800 freestyle in 8:48.12, out-touching Toronto's Anna Hein (8:48.13) by one-one hundredth of a second.
On the men's side, the Dinos were led by Commonwealth Games medalist
Stephen Calkins who collected 15 points for the men. Calkins won the, 100 freestyle (49.11) and 50 butterfly (24.37) as well as the 50 freestyle (22.28) where the Dinos went 1-2-3 with rookie
Addison Butler (23.22) and University of Manitoba transfer
Daniel Boguski (23.54) touching for second and third, respectively.
Richie Stokes was the only other Dino to win an individual event, and the only man under the 2-minute mark in the men's 200 backstroke with his time of 1:59.28.
A pair of Calgary rookies –
Charlotte Wagner and
Charlie Kwinter – were able to punch their tickets to the U SPORTS national championships in Victoria this February. Kwinter touched for a new personal best time of 2:01.79 in the men's 200 backstroke, below the 2:02.29 standard, while
Charlotte Wagner clocked a new lifetime best of 27.11 in the long course women's 50 freestyle on Friday night at the Toronto Swim Club Grand Prix to add her name to the roster.
Next the Dinos will head to Ottawa for an exciting tri-meet with the University of Ottawa Gee-Gees and Carleton Ravens, Sunday.
