CALGARY – Liz Mathisen's goal was the lone tally on Sunday afternoon as the UBC Thunderbirds edged the University of Calgary Dinos field hockey team 1-0 at Hawkings Field.
After a tightly contested 2-0 result on Saturday, the Thunderbirds had to wait until late to find the back of the net. Mathisen got the final touch on a ball that barely got past Dinos goalkeeper
Tayler Guy late in the third quarter.
In the final two minutes, the Dinos looked to generate some attack by pulling goalkeeper
Alana Madrid but UBC was able to hold off Calgary's late efforts.
Despite being held off the scoreboard, the Dinos displayed a strong offensive attack, with their best opportunity coming at the start of the second half.
Suzie Stone carried the ball up the right side into the circle where she looked to pass it off to
Elisa Johnson. The scoring chance was denied by UBC goalkeeper Hannah Rumble who picked up her second straight shutout.
"We've worked so hard and made so much progress, we need to start rewarding ourselves for all that by scoring," commented Dinos midfielder
Abigail Fung.
Following the match, Calgary honoured their graduating players,
Tiana Carroll,
Emily Smith,
Cindy Thai, and
Brooke Van Oosten as they played their final game at Hawkings Field.
The Thunderbirds travel to Vancouver Island next weekend where they will face the Victoria Vikes, Sept. 24-25.
The Dinos head into a bye week and return to action Oct. 1-2 when they face the Thunderbirds in Vancouver.
