Late goal sends T-Birds past Calgary

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos field hockey team hosted the UBC Thunderbirds for the first time this Canada West season Saturday. The spirited match left with the Thunderbirds winning the game, 2-0.

The Dinos started the game strong with a great long ball, looking to start with early pressure. The Dinos were able to keep consistent pressure within the Thunderbirds end. With two minutes left in the first quarter, Calgary earned a corner where Maddy Gaffney flicked the ball on net but was denied by goal keeper Hannah Rumble.

Danielle McBean finally gave the game its first goal just before halftime. UBC played a ball through the Dinos middle and into the circle, where McBean backhanded the ball into the back of the net to make it 1-0 in the 26th minute.

The back-and-forth match continued to play on for the second half. With numerous opportunities to capitalize on the net, the Dinos fell short. Izzy Fraser secured the Thunderbirds lead with a strong hit from the top of the circle in the 53rd minute to make it 2-0.

Tayler Guy had another strong performance in net for the Dinos. Fraser looked to add her second of the day late in Saturday's contest when the Thunderbirds were awarded a stroke, but Guy made a phenomenal save to keep the score the same.

The Dinos will look to close out their home series tomorrow at Hawkings field and celebrate their graduating seniors rematch starts at 11am.
