CALGARY – On a sunny Sunday September day, the University of Calgary Dinos field hockey team fell to the Victoria Vikes, 7-0, from Hawkings Field.
In a rematch of Saturday's 9-0 win by Victoria, the Dinos started strong and held their opponents to a 1-0 line at half before the Vikes attack found its rhythm after the break.
Put under pressure early, Calgary goalkeeper
Tayler Guy showed her strengths, saving numerous shots from a strong Victoria attack. In the 20th minute, Chloe Langkammer looked to make a baseline drive but was denied on a diving save by Guy.
The Vikes displayed a strong penalty corner unit Sunday, scoring five goals on penalty corners and having four different players earn a spot on the scoresheet.
Returning fifth-year player
Emily Smith spoke to the young Dinos squad's improvement from Saturday's game. "We had a much better result in the first half, largely because of some personal adjustments and commitments," Smith said.
Suzie Stone & rookie
Elisa Johnson showed their ability to attack the right side with several passing combinations up the right side to enter the circle. The Dinos dialed it in for the last five minutes. As they entered the circle,
Brooke Van Oosten fired a shot, but was stopped by goalkeeper Daya Titsworth.
The Dinos will host the UBC Thunderbirds next weekend September 17 & 18 at Hawkings Field, with both games starting at 11 a.m. The Victoria Vikes will head into a bye week in the Canada West Schedule.
