VANCOUVER – The University of Calgary Dinos women's rugby team earned a win and a loss to open the final leg of the Canada West Women's Rugby 7s Series on Friday afternoon.

Sofia Brussoni scored the lone try for the Dinos in their first match of the day, falling 33-5 to the Victoria Vikes.

Calgary responded with a 14-12 win over the Lethbridge Pronghorns in their second contest. Ashlynn Smith and Leah Brunner each scored tries, while a late tackle by Catrina Thompson helped preserve the win.

The UBC Thunderbirds took control of Pool B, posting a perfect record by defeating the Fraser Valley Cascades 64-0, the Trinity Western Spartans 59-5, and Alberta Pandas 31-5.

Pool A was led by the Vikes, who followed up their win over the Dinos with a 47-0 win over the Pronghorns.

Savannah Bauder continues to be a key player for UBC as she leads the tournament with six tries, while her teammate Shoshanah Seumanutafa added one try and 10 converts. Victoria's scoring attack was balanced in their opening two games as Maelle Reed and Carissa Norsten added two tries each. Alberta's Michelle Gratton also had a productive Friday by adding 4 tries and eight converts.

After their strong opening day performance, UBC will battle Calgary in the Semifinals on Saturday at 12:22 p.m. (MT) followed by the Vikes taking on the Pandas for the other gold medal berth. The bronze medal game is scheduled for 3:22 p.m. (MT) followed by the gold medal game at 3:44 p.m. (MT).
