VANCOUVER – The University of Calgary Dinos women's rugby team ran into a big performance from UBC Thunderbirds first-year wing Teniola Epemolu, who scored three tries as UBC cruised to a 41-0 win Saturday at Gerald McGavin UBC Rugby Centre.

The result marks significant progress for Calgary against a UBC side that enters the season as the reigning U SPORTS national champions. A year ago, the Dinos fell to the Thunderbirds 94-7 in the same fixture.

UBC needed little time to make an impact, slowly working its way up the pitch in the game's opening two minutes before Piper Logan faked a pass and beat a defender for the early try. Angel Boswell doubled the lead shortly after off a penalty near the try line, and Epemolu added her first just before the midway point of the half, hauling in a pass near the sidelines and running more than half the field to make it 19-0. Calgary kept UBC at bay for the remainder of the half with a string of hard tackles, and nearly got on the board themselves late, working the ball up the field before Bomi Lawal was stripped of the ball just short of the try line to keep UBC's lead intact.

The Dinos carried that defensive effort into the second half, dominating possession through the opening 10 minutes, but couldn't convert it into points. UBC pulled away from there, with Epemolu scoring twice more, in the 52nd and 70th minutes, and Sierra Hasse and Lanae Davenport adding tries of their own to close out the 41-0 result.

The Dinos will return to action Saturday, Sept. 26 when they host the Alberta Pandas.

UBC, meanwhile, will hit the road for its next matchup, travelling to face the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Thursday, Oct. 1.
