Pandas rally in second half to edge past Dinos

EDMONTON – The University of Alberta Pandas outscored the University of Calgary Dinos 22-14 in the second half of Friday's women's rugby fifteens match, erasing an early deficit to escape with a 29-21 win.

The Dinos led for most of the opening half, with Kenzie McEachern-Shields opening the scoring in the eighth minute and Allysen Stachiw's conversion made it an early 7-0 lead. Alberta answered in the 14th minute through Shaely Moodie, though the convert was missed, cutting the gap to two points. Calgary pushed the lead back to nine in the 26th minute when Kayla MacLean crossed over the line and Stachiw added the extra points for a 14-5 advantage. The Pandas hit back before the break, with Chloe Hedges scoring and Kate Alcock converting to make it 14-12 at halftime.

Alberta took a hold of the game after the restart as Keira Skrenek put the Pandas ahead for the first time in the 53rd minute before Kaitlin Tetteh-Wayoe scored another try to extend the margin to 22-14 ten minutes later. Alberta pulled further clear in the 73rd minute when Alcock scored her second try of the match and converted her own attempt to make it 29-14. Calgary pushed for a late comeback when Grace Freund scored in the 78th minute, with Stachiw's conversion closing the scoring at 29-21 and pushed hard for another score but were unable to cross the line.

Despite the result, Stachiw was perfect on the day, converting all three of Calgary's tries.

The Dinos will return to action Saturday, Sept. 19, when they host the UBC Thunderbirds at McMahon Stadium.

Alberta will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday, Sept. 19.
