VANCOUVER – After winning their home meet a week prior, the University of Calgary men's and women's swim teams both claimed second place behind the host UBC Thunderbirds over the weekend at the Odlum Brown Colleges Cup. 

The annual Colleges Cup meet hosted by UBC attracts several competitors, including all eight teams in the Canada West conference. 

On the women's side, world championship medallist Rebecca Smith once again cleaned up for the Dinos. The third-year nursing student from Red Deer racked up 93 points for the women's team. 

Smith took victory over UBC's Emma O'Croinin and Anna Dumont Belanger in both the 100 and 200 freestyle, touching the wall just over four seconds ahead of O'Croinin in the 200, clocking a time of 1:54.50. She also touched for the win in the 100 IM and grabbed second place in the 100 butterfly behind Victoria's Yasmine Perry. 

In addition to her individual performances, Smith anchored the women's 400 freestyle relay of Avery Movold, Eliza Housman and Emily De Jager to victory over the host Thunderbirds after blasting 53.00 spilt to catch UBC's Eloise Allen and touch for the win. 

Rookie Emily De Jager continued to show her strength in the freestyle events over the weekend. The first year picked up 72 points for the Dinos women en route to two new personal best times in the 200 and 800 freestyle events. 

De Jager touched for fourth in the 200 freestyle with a new lifetime best of 2:03.62, and shaved 3.3 seconds off her time in the 800 to take third behind Calgary teammate Marit Anderson and UBC's Rosalie Davidson, touching the wall at 8:56.97. 

On the men's side, Commonwealth Games team member Stephen Calkins made his presence known in the pool. The third year collected 91 points for the men's team. 

Calkins picked up wins in the 50 and 100 freestyle, as well as the 50 butterfly. He also took fourth in the 100 butterfly behind Dinos teammate Thomas McDonald and a pair of Thunderbirds, all separated by three tenths of a second.
 
Coming off his World Cup debut, Richie Stokes picked up 75 points for the men's team. 

The fourth-year education student raced to fifth in the 200 and 400 IM and climbed the podium after touching third in the 100 backstroke and second in the 200 backstroke. His time of 1:57.98 was just off his new lifetime best set last weekend at the FINA World Cup stop in Toronto, where he finished tenth with a time of 1:57.04. 

With just over two weeks to go before the 2022 Canada West Swimming Championships, the Dinos will be back in the water for final tune-ups to challenge for the team titles in VIctoria, Nov. 25-27.
