SASKATOON – The University of Calgary Dinos cross country team kicked off its 2022 season Saturday at the annual Sled Dog Open in Saskatoon.
Calgary finished third overall in both the men's and women's races, including an incredibly tight battle on the women's side where the top-three teams finished separated by just eight points.
Sihaam Khalid led the way for the Dinos, crossing the line third overall nearly 40 seconds faster than her time on the same course a season ago.
Rhian Paterson also turned in a top-10 finish for the Scarlet & Gold with a sixth-place finish. Rookie
Sam Vukadinovic and Katie Chehowy finished nearly side-by-side for 15th and 16th overall, respectively, while
Lily Gentile rounded out the scoring at 19th.
On the men's side, a trio of youngsters led the way for the Dinos.
Max Cook was the top Dinos runner in his collegiate debut, placing 13th overall. Second-year
Andrew Carlson ran with Cook the majority of the race and finished just behind in 17th overall, dropping over two minutes off his time from last season's opener on the same course. Rookie
Joshua Bateman was close behind for 22nd overall and third for the Calgary squad in his varsity debut.
Up next, the Dinos will get to compete right here in Calgary as the Dinos will host this year's Stewart Cup on Saturday, Oct. 15.
