Dinos show improvement on Day 1 of Edmonton 7s

EDMONTON – The University of Calgary Dinos opened the Canada West Women's Rugby 7s season with a win and two losses at the University of Alberta Rugby 7s tournament, inside the Dome at Foote Field.

Calgary sits in fourth, after losing to Alberta (15-12) and UBC (29-14), before ending the day with a 36-7 win over Trinity Western.

"While we started the tournament with a lot of enthusiasm, it took a couple of games to knock the rust off," admitted Dinos head coach Simon Chi. "Unfortunately, some costly decisions and turnovers cost us, but we will learn from them and continue to build into the second day."

Sofia Brussoni led the Dinos with three tries in three games, while Taejah Thompson added a pair in the final match of the day.

"We definitely got back to playing the way we want by the end of the day and want to take this momentum forward into some critical games tomorrow," said Chi.

Alberta and Victoria finished Day 1 with matching 3-0 records and sit atop the table with 12 points each. The UBC Thunderbirds sit in third place alone with 9 points, after dropping a thrilling 12-7 decision to Victoria in the final game of session 3.

The Spartans and Pronghorns will head into Sunday looking for their first win, with both teams finishing Saturday with 0-3 records.

It marks the first 7s event in Edmonton in over two years, after the cancellation of the 2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Day 2 of the Alberta Rugby 7s tournament gets underway at 9:28 a.m. on Sunday, with session #4. Session five kicks off at 12:02 p.m., before the medal round gets underway at 2:36 p.m.

All games will be streamed live on Canada West TV presented by Co-Op.
