CALGARY – The third-ranked, defending Canada West champion University of Calgary Dinos dominated the Canada West all-stars for 2018, recording 11 of the conference's 30 selections.
Calgary (8-0) hosts Manitoba (3-5) in a Canada West semifinal Saturday at McMahon Stadium looking for an 11th straight trip to the Hardy Cup. Kickoff goes at 12 p.m., live on TELUS Optik 997 and CanadaWest.tv.
Five offensive players, five defenders, and one special teamer were named all-stars after the Dinos rolled through the league, posting their third undefeated season since 2013. Of the three all-stars unanimously selected by the six Canada West coaches, two of them were Dinos: quarterback
Adam Sinagra and placekicker
Niko DiFonte.
Sinagra became the all-time U SPORTS single-season passing record holder last week at Alberta, finishing the year with 3,233 yards. He is joined on the offensive all-star squad by receivers
Hunter Karl and
Tyson Philpot along with offensive linemen
Tyler Packer and
Logan Bandy.
Defensively, the Dinos landed lineman
Joel Van Pelt, linebackers
Nick Statz and
Boston Rowe, and defensive backs
Sterling Taylor IV and
Deane Leonard on the all-conference squad.
Calgary's playoff opponent, the Manitoba Bisons, followed with eight all-star selections, while UBC earned selections at five positions and Saskatchewan four. The Alberta Golden Bears rounded out the all-star team with two honourees.
Of the Dinos' 11 all-stars, only
Boston Rowe makes a return appearance on the team, earning his third straight selection. The 11 selection marks the highest total since 2015, when a record 16 Dinos were named to the conference all-star team.
