Dinos fall to T-Birds in final home game of the season

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos were unable to hold off the UBC Thunderbirds on Sunday, dropping their final home game of the season, 2-0 on Hawkings Field.

Goal scorers for the Thunderbirds included Hannah Haughn and Sarah Keglowitsch. Calgary goalkeeper Alicia Frisch helped the Dinos keep it a low scoring game, along with the rest of the defence.

"Our defense has had a lot of opportunity to shine this season and they've been playing great," said Dinos head coach Henre Meyer. "They've been stepping up a lot, especially our back four who were really grinding it hard today. Madison Jarvis has a really good game today coming back from injury, Kimi (Durrer) stepped up, and Michelle (Patterson) has been fantastic in the left back position as well."

The Dinos put on the pressure early with a few opportunities in UBC's end, but it was some late corners that forced Calgary to make some big plays for the game to remain scoreless heading into the second half. In the second, the Thunderbirds got on the board in the 43th minute and later in the 58th, got their security goal off a deflection. Overall, Meyer was pleased with the performance.

"Today the girls showed up in red and they're far more dangerous in red. They were ready to go. We didn't concede a goal until the second half and they contested this game. They had opportunities and that was great, but there are still some things to work on in terms of attacking. Overall it was a really good performance from the girls today and they played really hard."

In their last home game of the season, the DInos support from the crowd was apparent, with cheers all game from the stands.

"We've had some really good turnout from fans this season and it's kind of sad that the home games are done already, but it's been great having crowd support and the alumni running the bake sale as well and it's just a further testament to developing this program and their support is huge."

The Dinos head out to Victoria to take on the Vikes, Oct. 4-5.
