LETHBRIDGE – Fifth-year Dinos swimmer
Bogdan Knezevic captured a gold medal and the student-athlete community service award Sunday as the Canada West swimming championships wrapped up in Lethbridge.
Knezevic, a multiple Academic All-Canadian, has volunteered at the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and recently had his first article published in the Journal of Experimental Biology. In addition to his work with the Hotchkiss Brain Institute, he is also involved in the University of Calgary chapter of the Triple Helix and given talks to several age group swim teams about maintaining a balance while pursuing dreams athletically and academically.
He did just that Sunday, capturing the gold medal in the men's 200-metre individual medley by a comfortable eight-tenths margin - one of nine podium finishes on the day for Calgary.
UBC captured both team championships, with the Dinos finishing second on the women's side and third in the men's standings.
Fiona Doyle, the reigning Dinos female athlete of the year, fell short in her quest to sweep the breaststroke events, settling for bronze in the 200 after winning both the 50 and the 100. She finished the meet with six medals, adding bronze in the 100 freestyle while helping the Dinos to a silver in the 4x100 medley relay with teammates
Stefanie Schmidt,
Rachael Grothe, and
Amanda Reason. Knezevic also helped the team reach the podium on the men's side, with Josh Dow,
Wyatt Yarish, and
Tristan Cote joining him with a bronze-medal finish.
Yarish added a silver medal in the 200 butterfly, while
Tianna Rissling captured bronze in the women's 200 IM. Schmidt and Cote both reached the podium in their respective 400-metre freestyle races, with Cote taking silver and Schmidt bronze.
The Dinos will now get set for the 2015 CIS Swimming Championships mid-February in Victoria, B.C.
