Flames prospects take out Dinos in exhibition play

| By:
CALGARY – The Flames prospects headed back to Calgary on Sept. 9 to take on the University of Calgary Dinos at Winsport, resulting in a 6-3 win.

The Dinos were outscored in the first two periods 3-0, but in the final frame, they scored three times to get on the board. Flames prospect Michael Ferland picked up two goals in the win.

Despite the lopsided score, Dinos head coach Mark Howell was happy with the Dinos play.

"You want your guys to play with intensity. The only time I felt we really got on our heels was during or after a penalty kill. It's not so much about physical play, but about intensity, playing hard and winning puck battles. For the most part, I thought we did that and I thought we played well."

With both Jacob DeSerres and Joni Ortio holding their own between the pipes in the first, it took a four-minute Flames power play to open the scoring.  Off a rebound near the left side boards, Zach Davies wristed a shot, eluding DeSerres for the 1-0 advantage.

Neither team shied away from the hitting game in the opening stanza. U.S. born defenceman Patrick Sieloff was throwing his body all over the ice, while Kodie Curran laid out Sven Baertschi with a huge open ice hit.

After failing to capitalize on a couple of early second period power plays, the University of Calgary sat back, allowing the Flames to extend their lead. Connecting on a man-advantage of their own, Michael Ferland was the recipient of a nice one-time pass by Turner Elson as he slid one behind DeSerres.

With the middle frame coming to a close, Ferland picked up his second of the night, putting the puck between the legs of Kris Lazaruk for a 3-0 lead. Lazaruk replaced DeSerres halfway through the game, giving both guys a chance to play.

The Dinos and Flames went at it in the final frame, but the Dinos would ultimately be outshot 19-8. Despite that stat, the Dinos scored three goals, matching three from the Flames in the final 20 minutes. Max Ross and Walker Wintoneak put one each past Ortio while rookie Drydn Dow scored his first as a Dino.

"I felt we kept a good pace with them for the most part. It was a high tempo game, a lot higher than what we are used to. It was too bad my first goal was at such a late time, but it was a good feeling getting that first one," said Dow.

Assists for the Dinos included two from defenceman Giffen Nyren, one from Spencer Edwards, and one each from newcomers Danny Gayle and Ryan Harrison.

The Dinos head to Regina on Friday to take on fellow Canada West teams including Manitoba on Friday, Saskatchewan on Saturday and end with Lethbridge on Sunday.
