CALGARY – The top-ranked team in the CIS put one more win under their belt to end 2013 as the University of Calgary Dinos knocked-off the Bentley Generals 6-1 on Friday night at the Father David Bauer Arena in exhibition play.
The game began with an early charge by Calgary, resulting in a 1-0 advantage as
Giffen Nyren scored the opening tally. Bentley responded before the period could end though as defenceman Jason Lundmark found the back of the net.
Ending the first period knotted at one, the Dinos received goals in the middle frame from
Taylor Stefishen and
Jordan Messier as the home team grabbed a lead they wouldn't surrender.
Three more goals were added by Calgary in the third as
Chance Lund,
Colton Grant and
Danny Gayle rounded out the scoring.
All three Dino goaltenders saw time between the blue paint.
Kris Lazaruk made 12 first period saves and was followed up by
Myles Hovdebo who was excellent in his 20 minutes of action with six stops of his own.
Jacob DeSerres, who on Friday was named the November WHL Grad of the Month, closed out the game with seven third period saves.
James Reid played all three periods for the Generals turning aside 39 shots.
Calgary outshot Bentley 45-26. The Dinos were 0-3 on the power play while the Generals went 1-2.
The Dinos return to the ice for regular season play Jan. 10-11 when they play a home-and-home series with the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Before that, however, Calgary will play a non-conference tune-up series against the Mount Royal Cougars on Jan. 3-4.
