Dinos come back from 2-0 deficit to win in five

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY - Greg Mann's 24 kills were the difference maker in the University of Calgary's 3-2 (24-26, 22-25, 26-24, 25-18, 15-13) win over the UBC Okanagan Heat on Nov. 30 at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.

The Dinos now improve to 6-5 with one game left in the calendar year, while the UBC Okanagan heat drop to 2-9. This marks the fifth, fifth-set match the Dinos have won so far this season. They are currently 5-2 in fifth-set matches in the 2013-14 season.

In one of his best performances of the season thus far, Mann scored a team-high 24 kills in the match and recorded five digs. Connor Frehlich also hit double digits once again with 13 kills and he had 13 block assists. Libero Cory Meeuwisse recorded a game-high 12 digs in the match and setter Alex Cook recorded 44 assists and seven digs in Calgary's win.

For the Heat, Nate Speijer scored an outstanding 31 kills for a game-high Kyle Pankratz followed that up with 10 kills of his own. Colten Litwin recorded 10 digs for UBC Okanagan.

The Heat led from the get-go to open up the match and the Dinos were unable to get their offence going. As Calgary began to pick it up, they went on a 4-0 run to get within two points at the technical timeout.

Mann's presence was already felt in the first set as he kept the Dinos in it, getting within one at 19-18. Tied at 20, the Heat were forced to call a timeout. The score was tied once again at 23, but it was UBC Okanagan that ultimately came out with the win in extra points with a 26-24 win.

In the second, Mann was already in double digits in kills for the Dinos as well as Speijer. The Dinos jumped out to an early lead and headed into the technical up 16-13. It wouldn't last long though as the Heat eventually tied it up at 17 with an ace. Despite Calgary calling a much needed timeout, it didn't help as some Dinos errors helped UBC Okanagan take a 20-17 lead on a 4-0 run.

With Jovan Jankovic coming into the game he helped the Dinos get within one with his serving, but their backs were against the wall later in the set as the Heat were too much to handle. The Dinos went down 2-0 needing to make a major comeback after a 25-22 UBC Okanagan second set win.

The third set was a close contest the whole time as a number of lead changes occurred. Tied at 11 and 13, the Heat were the team to take at 16-14 lead at timeout. With the offence picking up for Calgary, two tips, along with an ace from Mann and two kills from Kartev helped the Dinos tie the game up at 21. From there, some great defence in the back row for Calgary and an ace from Frehlich on game point pushing the match to a fourth set.

Needing to pull out another win to stay alive, the Dinos came out on fire in the fourth set while the Heat looked a bit lethargic. Taking advantage, Calgary sailed to the win with some nice work by rookie Keith West. The score read 25-18, forcing the fifth.

Two blocks from Kartev got the Dinos out to a 5-2 lead early in the fifth set, and UBC Okanagan was forced to call an early timeout. Three quick points from the Heat tied the game up as the timeout clearly worked. The Dinos headed into the switch up 8-7 in a very close set.

UBC Okanagan took their first lead of the fifth set at 10-8, but Calgary quickly tied it up at ten. The score remained tied up until 12 before two kills from Mann pushed the Dinos to match-point. A huge kill by Pankratz temporarily kept the Heat alive, but not for long as Frehlich had a massive kill to end the set 15-13.

The Dinos and the Heat will face each other tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. in their last game of the first half of the season before the Christmas break.
