Huskies get past Dinos for weekend split

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos couldn't hold on after a good start on Saturday night as the No. 3 University of Saskatchewan Huskies notched a 5-4 win to earn the split at the Father David Bauer Arena.

“I thought tonight we played better than we did last night up until the five-on-three,” said Calgary bench boss Mark Howell. “After that we become slow, soft, selfish and never got it back. Our whole mindset changed from that point on.”

Last night the Dinos stunned the defending conference champion Huskies by the alarming score of 8-0. Calgary held a comfortable 4-0 lead after 40 minutes, but extended their lead with a runaway third period. Saskatchewan was missing forwards Jimmy Bubnick and Derek Hulak, who were also out of Saturday's contest.

Just like last night, Walker Wintoneak opened the scoring for Calgary at 7:37 of the first period. From the left face-off circle, the former Saskatoon Blade rang a shot off the corner of the post and in for his sixth goal of the year while on the power play.

Building off what was a strong opening period last night, the Dinos doubled their advantage at the 10:35 mark. Wintoneak and Kevin King were in close at the left side of the goal where they both had shots. It was King though who capitalized as he squeezed his fifth of the season past Ryan Holfeld. Calgary ended the period dominating the shot clock 18-6 after working on three power plays.

The Huskies got on the score sheet for the first time this weekend at 3:54 of the second period. While on a two-on-one, Kyle Bortis connected as he fired a shot through Dustin Butler for his third of the campaign on the power play.

Calgary received a huge opportunity to reestablish their two-goal lead midway through the middle frame as they went on a two-man advantage for a full two minutes. As one of the penalties ended for Saskatchewan, the Huskies tied the game against a laid back Dinos power play. A pass by Bortis sent Chris Durand in alone where he went top shelf for his third marker of the year shorthanded.

A much more even second period ended with the game tied going into the third, setting the Huskies up to play their best hockey of the weekend in the final stanza.

Saskatchewan grabbed their first lead of the night at the 1:39 mark of the third. Craig McCallum broke into the zone from the left side before cutting in front and snapping a shot past the Dinos' goaltender. The goal was McCallum's third of the year.

Calgary tied the game a short time later. A shot thrown on net by Jesse Ismond was redirected by Max Ross for his second goal in as many games. Ismond and Kodie Curran would pick up assists on the play, with Curran's giving him four points on the weekend.

A goal from Jordan Peddle and another by McCallum put Saskatchewan up 5-3 in the later stages of the final period. The goal by Peddle went in during a scrum in front of the net when the Dinos were unable to clear the puck out of the blue paint, allowing the Huskies' forward swiped the puck in. McCallum's second of the evening found a hole on the right of Butler as it sneaked through the fifth-year netminder and in.

The Dinos cut the deficit to one late in the game at the 16:38 mark. From in front of the net, Blake Clement scored his second of the year and his second of the series to make it 5-4. The home side would pull the goaltender for an extra attacker in the final minute, but nothing would do as the Huskies held on the weekend split.

Despite falling on the wrong end of the scoreboard, Calgary outshot Saskatchewan 36-23 on the night.

“We have to play 60 minutes,” stated Howell of next weekend's games. “We have a short turnaround playing Thursday and need to focus on the things we did well to start the game tonight.”

The Crowchild Classic hits the ice for the first time this season next weekend as Calgary and Mount Royal play a home-and-home set from Nov. 22-23. The Huskies return home next weekend for games against the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Nov. 23-24.
