Dinos grab Keating Cup from StFX

| By:
ANTIGONISH, N.S. - The visiting Calgary Dinos ended the X-Men's five year streak as Keating Cup champions with a 2-1 victory Wednesday night in Antigonish.

Dinos forward Dylan Hood scored at the 10:47 mark of the first period to give the visitors a 1-0 lead that would hold until early in the third period. Hood's goal came after the Dino's were pressuring in the StFX end following a power play. Taylor Stefishen and Spencer Copp were credited with assists.

The second period saw the two teams exchange 2-on-1 power play opportunities, but no goals materialized. Calgary goaltender Dustin Butler robbed X-Men freshman forward Ted Stephens of a power play goal. Stephens one-timed a pass across the crease into what looked like an open net until Butler dove across with a stick save to bat the puck out of the air.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of the Dinos after 40 minutes of play, while shots were fairly even at 18-16 in Calgary's advantage.

Early third period penalty trouble for the X-Men resulted in the Dino's second goal of the game as defenseman Luke Egener notched a power play marker 2:50 into the final frame. The screen shot from the point beat X-Men netminder Joey Perricone over the right shoulder. Teegan Moore and Tyler Fiddler assisted on the goal.

The X-Men mounted a late game comeback as second year forward Scott Brannon scored with 4:34 left to play. Pressure around the StFX net resulted in the Brannon goal, with Jason Bast and R.D. Chisholm earning assists.

The X-Men continued to pressure late in the game and pulled the goaltender, but time wasn't on their side as the Dino's held on for the 2-1 win.

Butler and Jacob DeSerres and shared the goalkeeping duties for the Dino's while Perricone took the loss in the X-Men net, turning aside 19 pucks. StFX held a slight in in the total shots in the game (23-21).

X-Men defenseman Spencer McAvoy earned Player of the Game honors for the home team, while Dino's forward Dylan Hood was Player of the Game for Calgary.

The game marked the 6th edition of the annual Keating Cup, held in honor of the late Charles V. Keating, StFX alumnus and philanthropist. The X-Men had won their own Keating Cup challenge in each of the previous years to date.

The Dinos' Atlantic trip continues Friday and Saturday nights when they face the defending CIS champion UNB Varsity Reds in Fredericton, N.B.
