Huskies get even with sluggish Dinos

| By:
CALGARY – Former Calgary Hitmen star Kyle Bortis notched a goal and two assists and David Reekie was rock solid in net as the Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the University of Calgary Dinos by a score of 4-1.

BOX SCORE

Reekie, a first year goaltender for the Huskies, made 25 saves for the Huskies in his second victory of the season and Chris Durand scored two power-play goals as well for Saskatchewan. The Huskies outshot the Dinos 29-26 on the evening.

Aside from a 13-shot effort in the third, the Dinos seemed listless throughout the match after their gritty 4-3 comeback victory on Friday. The Calgary defence in particular had problems with turnovers on the evening, with two Husky goals coming off of miscues in the back-end.

Saskatchewan opened up the scoring in the first period when Chris Durand made good on his third goal of the season on the Huskies power play. The shot capped off a flurry of good opportunities in the Calgary zone for Saskatchewan, getting a good chunk of their 12 first period shots with the man advantage.

Forward Reid Jorgensen got the worst of a chippy second period, taking an awkward hit from behind by Chad Greenan, who picked up a game misconduct for his efforts, before getting flattened in the open ice of the Saskatchewan zone shortly thereafter. Jorgensen was able to shake both hits off and play for the rest of the match, finishing with two shots on goal.

The Huskies kept the pressure on in the second frame, outshooting the Dinos nine to five with an unassisted goal by Kyle Bortis proving the highlight. Bortis took advantage of a Dinos turnover before sliding the puck past a helpless Dustin Butler, marking his third of the season.

Teegan Moore, who missed on a great opportunity on a Saskatchewan turnover in the second period, made up for it early in the third period on a re-direct to make it a 3-1 game.

However any hopes of another Calgary comeback were quickly dashed by Saskatchewan defender Matt Swaby, who scored just a minute later on a fantastic one-timer through the five-hole of Butler.  Both Bortis and Steven DaSilva, who had two helpers on the night to push his season point total to 15, assisted on the play.

Calgary received solid offensive efforts from Dustin Hatlelid and Kyle Annesley, who fired five and four shots on goal respectively, while Cory Pritz played well on defence to go along with three shots.

With the victory, Saskatchewan improves to 4-5-1 on the season and moves into fourth place in Canada West. The Huskies will take on the UBC Thunderbirds in Saskatoon next weekend in an attempt to keep climbing in the standings after their slow start.

Calgary goaltender Dustin Butler made 25 saves in the loss for the Dinos (6-2-2), and falls to 6-2 on the season. The Dinos stay in second place in Canada West regardless of the loss, and will take a rest next weekend before bussing up the QE II on the weekend of Nov. 21 to face their provincial rivals, the Alberta Golden Bears.
