Field hockey Dinos look to play spoiler against Vikes

| By:

CALGARY - Two hard fought draws with their rivals, the Alberta Pandas, were not enough as the University of Calgary Dinos saw their field hockey playoff hopes dissolve yet again this past weekend. Closing out the regular season in Victoria with two games against the Vikes, the Dinos will look to continue to come together as a young team, and make improvements needed for the future. Knowing that the Vikes are in a race to the finish, the Dinos would be very interested in spoiling their fun.

Their season record against the Pandas shows that they have definitely turned a corner in Canada West action, going 1-1-2 this year against the Edmonton team. However their inability to take points from their BC counterparts has still been a thorn in the side of the Dino squad.

This weekend against Victoria, Calgary should be able to play a relaxed form of field hockey, knowing they are now simply playing for their pride. Being able to take some points off the Vikes in the form of ties or wins would go a long way for building confidence levels in the young Dinos team.

Goaltender Stephanie Petrowitsch (1st, Calgary) has been very solid in net this year for Dinos, and if team sparkplugs Kaelyn Barrie (2nd, Calgary) and Heather Bain (2nd, Calgary) can help generate some offensive consistency in front of Petrowitsch, the Dinos could see their fortunes change this weekend as they end their season.

The Vikes are coming off of a very successful weekend, as they kept their hopes of winning the Canada West alive. They beat the UBC Thunderbirds 2-1 on Saturday and then drew even with the T-Birds on Sunday. With the Canada West title still up for grabs, the Victoria squad now has extra motivation this weekend against the Dinos.
