REGINA – The University of Calgary Dinos fastball team went 2-1 in a Saturday tripleheader against Saskatchewan and SAIT, before Sunday's doubleheader against Regina was cancelled due to rain.
Strong hitting not enough as Dinos fall to Saskatchewan
Despite out-hitting Saskatchewan 10-3, Calgary fell 4-3 to the Huskies on Saturday.
Brooklyn Bianchini,
Alexis Luttmerding and
Parker Huot each collected two hits for the Dinos.
Calgary opened the scoring in the second inning when
Madison Belden tripled home a run.
Belden took the loss, going five innings and allowing four runs, none earned, on three hits, with four strikeouts and a walk.
Bianchini provided the pop in the middle of the Calgary lineup, leading the team with two RBIs. The right fielder went 2-for-4 on the day.
Dinos claim victory over Saskatchewan in nightcap
Calgary bounced back to take the second game of the doubleheader 5-1. The Dinos opened the scoring in the bottom of the first on back-to-back singles:
Mia Pielak's suicide-squeeze single drove in
Katie Berg, and a
Chloe Kinghorn single later extended the lead to 3-0 in the third.
Pielak earned the win, going the distance and allowing three hits and one unearned run over seven innings, with two strikeouts and three walks.
Pielak,
Angelina Hargreaves, Berg, Kinghorn, Belden,
Olivia Goertz and Huot each collected a hit for Calgary. Pielak, Kinghorn, Goertz and Huot each drove in a run. Berg stole two bases.
Dinos rally past SAIT 12-8
Calgary capped the day with a 12-8 win over the SAIT Trojans. The Trojans got on the board first in the top of the first when Christina Van De Velde tripled to centre field and Aly Meyer grounded out, each scoring a run.
The Dinos flipped the game in the bottom of the first, scoring seven runs on four hits to take a 7-2 lead.
Calgary extended the lead to 11-7 in the bottom of the second after a
Mackenna Meyer fielder's choice, a
Hallie Miller double down the right-field line, a Miller steal of home, and an
Angelina Hargreaves single down the left-field line, each scoring a run.
Kate Gross earned the win despite allowing seven hits and eight runs, four earned, over four innings, with three strikeouts and a walk.
Anna Forbes pitched a scoreless inning of relief, striking out two without allowing a hit.
Miller, hitting seventh, led the way with three RBIs, going 2-for-3 on the day. Rookie Vivi Eng, playing in her first game as a Dino, led the team with three hits in three at-bats. Hargreaves added two hits in three at-bats. The Dinos worked five walks and stole three bases as a team.
