Dinos go 3-2 in rain-soaked weekend at Shouldice

CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos fastball team went 3-2 over a rain-affected weekend at Shouldice, highlighted by a pair of blowout wins on Sunday.

Vikes jump on Dinos early in 11-4 win

University of Victoria opened the weekend with an 11-4 win over Calgary under the lights on Friday. The Vikes jumped ahead in the top of the first when Bella Glawson singled home two runs, and Kristen Bertelsen followed with a three-run home run to left field. Victoria added three more runs in the second on home runs from Lauren Parsons and Madison Hillman.

Alexis Luttmerding worked three and two-thirds innings in relief for Calgary, allowing five hits and four runs, one earned, with two strikeouts and three walks. Madison Belden took the loss, going one and one-third innings and surrendering seven runs on six hits.

Brooklyn Bianchini went 2-for-3 with a team-high three RBIs, while Bianchini, Chloe Kinghorn and Belden each had multi-hit games. Olivia Goertz drew a team-high two walks as the Dinos worked four walks on the day.

Dinos rally to edge UBC Okanagan 8-7

Calgary trailed by as many as four runs before coming back to beat the UBC Okanagan Heat 8-7 on Saturday morning. Katie Berg got the Dinos on the board with an RBI single in the first, and Olivia Goertz's RBI single plus a run scored on a wild pitch gave Calgary a 3-1 lead in the second.

UBC Okanagan answered with five runs on three hits in the top of the fourth to go up 7-3, highlighted by a two-run triple from Willa Bonsall. Calgary tied it in the sixth when Parker Huot was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Madison Belden earned the win, allowing eight hits and seven runs, three earned, over six innings with seven strikeouts and a walk. Huot drove in a team-high two runs, Berg led the Dinos with three hits in four at-bats, and Bianchini and Goertz each added multi-hit games. Angelina Hargreaves drew two walks as Calgary worked six walks as a team.

Vikes complete sweep of Saturday's second game, 14-5

Victoria took the second game of Saturday's slate 14-5. The Vikes scored in the first when Victoria Perry singled and Hudsyn Milne grounded out, each driving in a run, then added three more in the second on a Lauren Parsons home run to left field.

Mia Pielak took the loss, going two and two-thirds innings and allowing 12 runs, 10 earned, on eight hits. Angelina Hargreaves went 2-for-2 with a team-high three RBIs, and Vivi Eng led the Dinos with two walks and two stolen bases as Calgary worked six walks on the day.

Following the two losses to Victoria, head coach Neal Harlos said the team struggled offensively and defensively against the Vikes but expects to clean things up before a rematch next weekend in Saskatoon, adding he was proud of how the group responded with wins after each setback.

Bianchini's four RBIs power Dinos past Lethbridge 14-3

Calgary's bats came alive Sunday morning, opening with a 14-3 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns. Brooklyn Bianchini drove in four runs on two hits, including a two-run home run to centre field in the fifth and an RBI single in the first.

The Dinos broke the game open in the first inning, with Bianchini and Goertz each singling home a run before Huot hit a grand slam to centre field and Belden added a solo home run. Calgary tacked on two more in the second on a Lethbridge error and a Mackenna Meyer RBI single, then extended the lead to 10-0 in the third on a Luttmerding groundout. Four more runs came in the fifth on a Hargreaves sacrifice fly, a two-run Bianchini home run and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Huot.

Belden earned the win, allowing four hits and one run over four innings with three strikeouts and two walks, and Kate Gross closed it out in relief. Calgary piled up 14 hits as a team; Huot led the way with five RBIs, Berg paced the Dinos with three hits in four at-bats, and Bianchini, Kinghorn, Belden and Meyer each had multi-hit games. Meyer drew a team-high two walks as Calgary worked five walks, added three stolen bases and played error-free defence.

Huot's three-hit day leads Dinos past Mount Royal 15-4

Calgary closed out the weekend with a 15-4 win over the Mount Royal University Cougars. Parker Huot went 3-for-4 with a home run to centre field in the sixth inning to go with two singles.

The Dinos got on the board in the second inning on RBI hits from Kate Gross, Mackenna Meyer, a two-run double from Angelina Hargreaves and a three-run triple from Olivia Goertz. Calgary added seven more runs on seven hits in the sixth, with Huot's three-run homer, a three-run single from Meyer and an RBI double from Hargreaves.

Gross earned the win, allowing five hits and four runs over four and two-thirds innings with three strikeouts and four walks, while Mia Pielak tossed one and one-third scoreless innings in relief, striking out two. Calgary collected 17 hits as a team; Goertz led with four hits in five at-bats, Hargreaves, Goertz and Huot each drove in three runs, and Meyer added a 2-for-4 day. Hallie Miller led the Dinos with two walks as Calgary worked six walks and played error-free defence.
