CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos swimming program has announced Nick Lapointe as its new full-time assistant coach ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Lapointe has a decade-long history with the program, having started as a volunteer coach with the Dinos swim team before moving into roles with UCalgary's Active Living and the University of Calgary Swim Club (UCSC), where he has worked as both a strength coach and a national development coach.
He has also coached provincially and nationally, working camps for Swim Alberta and Swimming Canada.
Lapointe replaces
Ray Betuzzi, who is leaving to join the coaching staff at the Calgary Patriots Swim Club. During Betuzzi's time with the Dinos, the program captured three Canada West titles – the women in 2021 and the men in 2023 and 2024.
"While we are sad to see Ray go, we are excited to have Nick come into our program," said Dinos swimming head coach
Mike Blondal. "He's earned this opportunity, and he'll be a huge asset – for our program's growth, for bringing in top athletes, and for strengthening our ties across the Calgary swim community."
A native of Timmins, Ont., Lapointe spent 15 years as a competitive swimmer, including four seasons with Laurentian University, where he earned an Honours Bachelor of Physical and Health Education degree. He holds a post-graduate certificate in Exercise Science for Health and Performance from Niagara College. He is a National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) Level 3 Coach and is certified through the Canadian Strength and Conditioning Association.
The Dinos swimming team opens its season Oct. 24 when it hosts its annual invitational meet. It is the start of a busy year that will conclude with the Dinos hosting the 2027 U SPORTS Swimming Championships at MNP Community & Sport Centre from March 4-6.
