CALGARY – Ethan Meyer,
Max Cook and
Amaia Ervin-Arambarri earned Canada West All-Star honours as the University of Calgary Dinos men's and women's cross country teams both placed fourth at the 2026 Canada West Cross Country Championships, hosted by the Dinos at St. Mary's University on Saturday, Oct. 31.
Meyer led the Dinos men with a seventh-place finish in 26:45, earning a Canada West First All-Star Team selection. Cook placed 10th in 26:50 and was named to the Second All-Star Team.
Edward Healy was 29th in 27:46,
Kai Deausy 30th in 27:48,
Niklas Scherer 45th in 28:23 and
Sam Prezio 52nd in 28:47.
Meyer said the final kilometre was the toughest part of his race.
"That last 1K was probably the hardest 1K of my life," he said. "The course was tricky in some areas where you could lose your footing, and I was definitely blowing up towards the end, but once I got up that last hill, my 800-metre kick really pulled through."
On the women's side, Ervin-Arambarri paced the Dinos with a 14th-place finish in 31:34 and was named to the Second All-Star Team. She also received the Student-Athlete Community Service Award for the female competition.
Jenna Conrad placed 18th in 31:41, followed by
Elsa Ben Hamou-Kuijpers in 26th (32:27),
Csenia Irvin in 29th (32:51),
Meagan Smith in 38th (33:28),
Eloisa Castillo in 47th (34:27) and
Lauren Westlake in 54th (36:11).
Ervin-Arambarri said her thoughts in the final kilometres were with her teammates.
"I really wanted to qualify for U SPORTS with them, especially with these being our last couple of years together," she said. "I wanted to have a strong race for both them and myself so we could have another race together. I love them all so much."
Dinos assistant coach Colton Quinn said both teams were happy with how they ran.
"I'm really proud that they executed the race plan so well," he said. "They went out at the right pace and gradually moved up through the field, which was exactly what we wanted. Both teams also achieved their goal of placing fourth, which is awesome."
The Dinos men scored 115 points and the women 110.
The University of Victoria Vikes swept the team titles, capturing the women's third straight Harold Wright Trophy and 24th overall with 35 points, and the men's 18th P.S. Warren Trophy with 39. The University of Regina Cougars (63) and the UBC Thunderbirds (66) rounded out the men's podium, while UBC (39) and the University of Alberta Pandas (82) finished second and third in the women's race. Victoria's women won by four points.
UBC's Maximilien Filion won the men's individual title in 25:52, eight seconds ahead of Regina's Ian Teichler, with Victoria's Daniel Damian third in 26:14. Victoria's Madelyn Eybergen won the women's race in 29:16, 41 seconds clear of teammate Marisha Thompson, with Abigail Yakemchuk of UBC Okanagan third in 30:44.
Filion and Eybergen were named the male and female Canada West Athletes of the Year. Victoria head coach Hilary Stellingwerff was named Canada West Coach of the Year for both the men's and women's competitions. UBC's Randy Ren and Victoria's Hailie Robertson were named the Rookies of the Year, and Regina's Brett MacLean received the Student-Athlete Community Service Award in the male competition.
Both Dinos teams will compete at the U SPORTS Cross Country Championships on Saturday, Nov. 14, hosted by McMaster University in Hamilton, Ont.
