The year 2026 kicks off with a bang for the University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team, in a top-10 showdown at home with Regina. Friday's return to action gets underway at 6 p.m., before Saturday's rematch at 4 p.m. Both games will take place inside the Jack Simpson Gym.
Calgary is off to a perfect 10-0 start to the year under first-year head coach Sarah Besselink. The Dinos hold weekend sweeps over Lethbridge, Brandon, UFV, Winnipeg and Manitoba and will now turn to the meat of their schedule. An incredible four teams in the Canada West Prairie Division are 10-0 at the break, and the Dinos will play all three of them during the second semester, starting this weekend with the Cougars.
Regina comes to campus also sporting a 10-0 record. They have also swept Brandon, Lethbridge and Manitoba so far this season, in addition to Victoria and Mount Royal.
Not much separates the Dinos and Cougars on paper, as Calgary is averaging 78.0 points per game and allowing just 54.2 points against in conference play, while Regina is scoring an average of 78.5 points and allowing 50.7 points per game against in league play.
Calgary and Regina have battled to some incredible contests in recent years. The two programs split the last two regular-season head-to-head matchups, including last year's split in Saskatchewan to close the regular season.

Calgary's men's basketball team returns to the court this Friday and Saturday, hosting Regina to open the New Year at home. The two teams tip off Friday at 8 p.m. before closing out the weekend Saturday at 6 p.m. again inside the Jack Simpson Gym.
The winter break came at the right time for the banging up Dinos, as they used the time to rest up. Calgary - sporting a nearly entirely new starting five from last year's conference championship roster - finished the first semester 5-5 in league play. Interestingly, the Dinos scored exactly the same number of points as they allowed - 775 - through their first 10 conference games this season.
Regina starts the home stretch at 4-6, finishing the first half going 1-3 over the final two weekends against Brandon and Mount Royal. Calgary native Lodi Kenyi leads the Cougars in scoring at 17.4 points per game, thus far, while third-year forward Kaz Dornstauder ranks in the top-five in Canada West in rebounding (7.8), blocks (15) and field goal percentage (54.2).
Calgary holds an impressive head-to-head record over Regina in recent years, winning eight of the last 10 conference matchups. Last year, the Dinos closed out the regular season with a weekend sweep of the Cougars in Regina, winning by 17 and 13 points.

After an impressive start to the year for the Dinos women's hockey program, the home stretch starts this weekend at home, welcoming Regina to campus for two games inside Father David Bauer Arena. Friday's return to the ice is set for a 7 p.m. start, while Saturday's rematch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Calgary had an impressive first semester, going 11-4-3 to give them 25 points and rank them second in the Canada West East Division and third overall in the conference. The Dinos have boasted some of the best goaltender play in the country thus far, with fourth-year Amelia Awad ranking second in the nation in save percentage (.963) and fifth in goals against (1.11) after an impressive 10 games between the pipes in the first semester.
Regina returns to the ice with a 5-8-3 record for 13 points and will need to get hot over down the stretch if they want to catch Saskatchewan for the battle for the third and final playoff spot in the East. Rookie Amy Swayze has been a huge boost for the Cougars this season, boasting a 1.77 goals-against average through nine games to go with two shutouts.
The Dinos and Cougars opened the 2025-26 season in Saskatchewan. Calgary took the opener, 1-0, before Regina responded with a 3-0 win the following day, with the final two goals scored on an empty net. The last three weekend sets in the overall series have been splits between the two programs.

The No. 3 Dinos men's hockey program hits the road to start 2026, traveling to Regina to take on the Cougars Friday and Saturday inside The Co-operators Centre. Friday's puck drop is set for 6 p.m. MT, while Saturday's action is scheduled for a 4 p.m. MT start.
After being picked fifth in the preseason coaches' poll, the Dinos were one of the stories of all of U SPORTS in the first semester, racking up a 15-3 record before the winter break and being ranked No. 1 in the nation down the stretch. After this weekend, Calgary will go up against UBC, Mount Royal and Saskatchewan - the teams currently ranked 1st, 3rd and 4th in the conference standings - as a strong test over the final 10 games before postseason action gets underway.
Adam Kydd was the catalyst of the Dinos prolific attack in the first half, racking up a league-leading 33 points on six goals and an incredible 27 assists - by far the most in all of U SPORTS.
It's been a tough go of things for Regina so far, holding a 2-14 record coming into the New Year. The Cougars do hold impressive wins over Mount Royal and MacEwan, but have been outscored 81-30 through their first 16 games.
Calgary has had its way with the Cougars for quite some time, dropping just two games in the series in the last decade. The two teams met to start the conference slate earlier this season, with the Dinos posting 7-2 and 9-2 wins at home. Calgary's last loss in the series came back on Nov. 27, 2021 in a 4-0 defeat at Regina.

Women's volleyball will look to pick up where they left off as they return to the court on the road, traveling to Kelowna, B.C., for a weekend set against UBCO. Friday's action is set to get underway at 6:30 p.m. MT, with first serve Saturday scheduled for 5:30 p.m. MT.
With loads of new faces on this year's roster, the Dinos went 5-5 over the first half of the season but got hot down the stretch going into break. Calgary won its last three matches of 2025, including sweeping Winnipeg and UFV in consecutive showings. Calgary sits in eighth place in the league standings with 10 games still to play.
UBCO sits right below the Dinos in the league standings heading into the weekend with a 4-8 ledger. The Heat snapped a five-game skid with a 3-2 win over Brandon to head into the break on a high note.
Interestingly, Calgary has played just 35 sets in conference play - tied for the fewest of any team in Canada West, thus far. While UBCO has played two more matches, they lead the league with 47 sets played through 12 matches.
The Dinos and Heat have split their two most recent weekend series, with each team claiming a straight-sets win in Calgary in November of last season.

The Dinos men's volleyball team also is back to conference play this weekend, taking on league-leading UBCO for two games inside the UBCO Gymnasium. Both games are scheduled to begin following the conclusion of the women's matches.
Calgary sits in a tie for eighth place in the ever-deep Canada West standings through their first 10 games. It has been boom or bust weekends thus far for second-year head coach Graham Vigrass' squad, sweeping MacEwan to start the season and taking both from UFV to close out the semester. Sandwiched in the middle are road sweeps by Manitoba, Trinity Western and Winnipeg.
The Dinos also made a trip to California over the break and more than held their own in the North American Challenge, with four matches against some of the premier programs in the NCAA.
UBCO will look to continue their dream season. The Heat finished the first semester ranked No. 4 in the nation with an incredible 11-1 record, already surpassing their program record for wins in a single season. It has been a balanced attack that has helped the Heat get where they are, while their defence has been superb - leading Canada West in both blocks per set (2.77) and digs per set (9.67).
Calgary has won the last five head-to-head battles with UBCO, including a home sweep last season that saw the Dinos walk away with a 25-21, 25-12, 25-16 victory in the most recent showdown.

The Dinos track & field program will travel to Saskatchewan this weekend for the annual Sanderson Classic. Action starts Friday and wraps up Saturday from the Saskatoon Field House.
Through the first two meets of the year, Calgary is off to a fantastic start. Between limited action at the home opener and last weekend's meet in Edmonton, the Dinos already boast 13 of the top-10 marks in the nation.
The U of S is also the host of this year's Canada West Championships.
Up next, Calgary heads back to the Butterdome for the annual Golden Bear Open.
