CALGARY – After a championship weekend,
Kenan Wipf of the University of Calgary Dinos has been named the Canada West BioSteel Men's Curling Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Led by his veteran leadership and skill on the ice, fourth-year skip Wipf guided the Calgary Dinos to its first Canada West Championship in over 60 years.
Wipf and the Dinos earned the top seed through round robin play after finishing nearly perfect with a 7-1 mark. They followed that up with a 10-1 win in the semifinals and a convincing 7-4 margin over Alberta in the conference championship.
The win is more than noteworthy for Wipf and the Dinos. The Calgary native has been with the program since its return to the UCalgary campus in 2022. He has helped the Dinos bring home two Canada West silver medals in the first three years before claiming gold on Sunday in Edmonton.
Wipf and the Dinos now advance to the nationals for the third time in four years. This year's championships are hosted by Regina Feb. 17-21.
