EDMONTON – History was made on Sunday at the Saville Centre as the University of Calgary Dinos captured their first conference banner in 62 years.
The Dinos brought the sport back to campus in 2022 and have had immediate success, finishing as Canada West silver medallists twice in the first three years back on the pebbled ice before bringing home their first conference championship since 1964 on Sunday.
"I'm so glad that we were able to bring a Canada West (championship) to Calgary," skip
Kenan Wipf said. "It's a great way to finally show all the hard work that has been put forward by the coaches, players and all the many people who have been alongside this squad since we began four years ago. I'm proud of the guys and how well that they performed this whole event."
After dispatching the Golden Bears the day prior in round robin play, the Dino men showed that their success was no fluke this week, cruising past Alberta with a 7-4 win after seven ends in the championship final on Sunday. Calgary went 9-1 over the four-day competition, which saw them secure the No. 1 seed entering the playoffs thanks to a 7-1 round-robin record.

Kenan Wipf was excellent in the final, leading the Dinos to scores of two in the first and third ends, and a steal of one in the fourth to give Calgary a commanding 5-2 lead at the break. The Dinos kept their foot on the gas with aggressive shot-making in the fifth, holding the Bears to a single, before scoring another pair in the sixth to all but seal the win.
Calgary earned a 10-1 win over Victoria in the semifinal on Sunday morning to set up the championship match with the Bears, who defeated Regina 5-3 in the semifinal.
The Dinos and Bears will join the host Regina Cougars at the 2026 U SPORTS Championship in Regina, with the Calgary women earning a 7-3 over UBC Okanagan in the third-place game to secure the final Canada West berth to nationals.
The 2026 U SPORTS Championship will run from February 17th to 21st at the Callie Curling Club in Regina.
