Dinos' defence can't hold back Vikes

VICTORIA – The University of Calgary Dinos field hockey team fell 6-0 to the Victoria Vikes at Lynne "Buzz" Beecroft Field on Sunday.

Victoria moves to 5-0-1 on the season with the win, while Calgary falls to 0-6-0 following the loss.

The Dinos opened with urgency, pushing into the Vikes' half in the early minutes. Victoria's Julia Boraston created the best chance of the quarter, driving the ball into the circle for Maddie Hunter, whose shot rattled off the crossbar. The Vikes earned back-to-back short corners soon after, but Calgary defender Maya Doman came up with a key stop to keep the game scoreless. Strong goaltending from Madison Forest helped the Dinos keep the game scoreless through the first quarter.

Calgary's Isabella Green came up big on defence to open the second quarter, making two key stops in the circle to deny a Vikes chance from Josie Dunham. Victoria earned back-to-back short corners but couldn't break through the Dinos' defensive line, until Sadie Lee broke through in the 25th minute for the 1-0 Vikes lead. Two minutes later, the Vikes were able to capitalize on back-to-back penalty corners with two goals from Libby Hogg, putting the Vikes ahead 3-0 heading into halftime.

Victoria struck first out of the break, with Boraston finding the back of the net on a penalty corner in the 37th minute for the 4-0 Vikes lead. Later in the frame, Calgary defender Maddy Gurlach came up with a crucial stop for the Dinos, ending a breakaway from Josie Dunham.

Victoria threatened once more in the third on a penalty corner attempt, but Forest turned away Maeve Connorton's shot with a big save to send the game into the final frame with the Vikes ahead, 4-0.

Victoria added goals from Dunham and Lee in the 57th and 60th minutes to seal the win by a final score of 6-0.

Canada West field hockey action heads into its final weekends of the season, with the Dinos heading  to Vancouver next to play the UBC Thunderbirds on Oct. 4-5. The Vikes will battle the Thunderbirds in Victoria, Oct. 18-19.
