Dino Tracks: Sept. 23-29

Dinos Football (2-2)
Saturday, Sept. 27 | Calgary vs. Saskatchewan | McMahon Stadium | 1:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats

It's another big showdown for the Calgary Dinos football program, as they get set to host No. 5 Saskatchewan (3-1) from McMahon Stadium Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. kick off.

Calgary dropped a heartbreaker last weekend, falling by one at UBC in a 23-22 slugfest that saw a combined 16 points in the game's final 5:19 of action. With the loss, the Dinos drop to 2-2 in a wide open Canada West, that sees two teams tied atop the conference standings at 3-1 (Regina and Saskatchewan), while Calgary, UBC and Manitoba all sit tied at one game back.

The Dinos have been in some close ones this season, winning by one and by four, while losing by seven in overtime and now by one. Dating back to last season, 10 of the last 12 games have been one-score games at the finish.

Two of those one-score games a season ago came against Saskatchewan. The Huskies won a 44-40 double-overtime thriller in Week 3 before a 16-11 win in Week 8, scoring the go-ahead major with seven seconds left on the clock. While the Huskies have won six of the last seven regular-season games in the head-to-head series, Calgary still holds a 63-45-1 edge all-time against Saskatchewan.

Saturday, Sept. 27 | Calgary vs. Manitoba | McMahon Stadium | 7:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats

After starting the season with six of their first eight games on the road, the undefeated Dinos women's soccer team returns home this weekend, hosting Manitoba for two games at McMahon Stadium both Friday and Saturday. Both games are scheduled to start at 7 p.m.

Calgary nearly pulled off an impressive comeback on the road last time out. Trailing 2-1 late at MacEwan, Kaleigh Major scored two goals just 90 seconds apart to put the Scarlet & Gold ahead. But a late goal by the Griffins saw the Dinos settle for a tie - their first game they didn't walk away with the win so far this season.

The Dinos climbed up to No. 3 in the nation in this week's U SPORTS top 10. That marks the highest ranking for the program since Diogo Raposo was named head coach and the highest overall since being No. 1 for the first two weeks coming out of the pandemic in 2021.

Calgary has had success against Manitoba - which comes into the weekend at 0-7-1. Last season, the Dinos won 8-2 at home early in the year before a 3-2 win in Winnipeg. Calgary has won its last eight regular season matchups with the Bisons, last falling back on Oct. 11, 2014 in a 3-2 road contest.
Dinos Men's Soccer (7-2)
Saturday, Sept. 27 | Calgary at Alberta | Foote Field | 2:15 PM | Watch | Live Stats

Sunday, Sept. 28 | Calgary at MacEwan | Edmonton Scottish Soccer Dome | 12:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats

With just five games left in the regular season, the ninth-ranked Dinos men's soccer team heads to Edmonton this weekend to take on a pair of provincial rivals. Calgary opens Saturday with a 2:15 p.m. game at Alberta (4-3-2) before a Sunday noon kickoff against MacEwan (0-6-3) from the Edmonton Scottish Soccer Dome.

The Dinos head into the weekend on a four-game winning streak that saw them outscore their opponents 16-4. The final of those results came against the eighth-ranked Victoria Vikes in a 2-1 back-and-forth showdown at McMahon Stadium.

For their efforts, Calgary finds itself in the U SPORTS top-10 for the first time since the 2016 season, cracking this year's rankings at No. 9.

Kimia Kassanda was named the Canada West Men's Soccer BioSteel Athlete of the Week, after netting two goals and an assist in Calgary's two latest wins. Kassanda is coming on strong at the midway point. The second-year forward now has three goals and four assists through the first nine games on the year, after tallying one goal and one assist in earning Canada West All-Rookie honours a season ago.

Up next, the Dinos take on Alberta and MacEwan. Calgary opened the 2025 season with a 4-1 home win over the Griffins before suffering a 2-1 loss to Alberta one day later in a game that featured 13 total cards handed out between the two rivals. While the Scarlet & Gold has had success recently against MacEwan, winning it's last three and suffering only one loss in the last seven showdowns, they will be looking to improve against the Golden Bears. Alberta has not lost to Calgary since Oct. 23, 2022, and hasn't lost in the series in Edmonton since Oct. 16, 2021.
Dinos Golf
Sunday, Sept. 28 | Calgary at UofA Invitational | Millwoods Golf Course

Monday, Sept. 29 | Calgary at UofA Invitational | Millwoods Golf Course

Fresh off sweeping their home tournament this past weekend, the Dinos golf teams are back in action for their third and final regular-season tournament of the fall. Calgary will travel north to Edmonton for the annual UofA Invitational at Millwoods Golf Course. Sunday's start time is scheduled for 12:06 p.m., while Monday's action is set to begin at 8:42 a.m.

Third-year Adam Reed and rookie Brooke Tombs swept the Canada West Athlete of the Week honours this week after claiming the men's and women's individual titles at the Calgary Invitational this past weekend. Reed was the lone golfer to shoot under par on Monday, while Tombs was the most consistent women's golfer all weekend as the duo dominated. They also helped lead the Dinos to team wins - the second of the season so far for the men's squad.

After this weekend's action, the Dinos will have three weeks to prepare for this year's Canada West Championships, hosted this year by UFV in Chilliwack, B.C. on Oct. 20-21.
Dinos Field Hockey (0-4)
Saturday, Sept. 27 | Calgary at Victoria | Lynn "Buzz" Beecroft Field | 12:00 PM MT
Sunday, Sept. 28 | Calgary at Victoria | Lynn "Buzz" Beecroft Field | 12:00 PM MT

After a week off, the Dinos field hockey team is back in action this weekend, heading to Victoria to take on the league-leading Vikes for two games Saturday and Sunday. Both games are schedule to start at noon MT.

The Dinos are continuing to make strides under second-year head coach Jenn Beagan. Despite their 0-4 record, the team continues to turn in strong performances each time out, as demonstrated by their home finale last time out which coach Beagan referred to the second half of that game as "some of the best hockey we've put together so far as we continue to grow." In that half, Calgary shut out the six-time defending national champion Vikes.

Calgary now starts the second half of the season with two more games against the Vikes. Victoria is coming off a weekend in Vancouver that saw them tie UBC in the opener before a 2-0 shutout in Sunday's finale to put the reigning champs atop the conference standings at 3-0-1 at the midway point.

The Dinos last won against Victoria two seasons ago in a 5-4 shootout win at home.
Dinos Rugby (0-4)
Saturday, Sept. 27 | Calgary at Alberta | Foote Field | 5:00 PM | Watch

The Dinos women's rugby squad is on the road one final time this regular season, traveling to Edmonton for a rematch with the Pandas Saturday at 5 p.m.

Calgary is coming off a disappointing 22-19 loss at Lethbridge last weekend, trailing 17-0 at the half before putting together arguably its best showing of the season in the second half, only to see their comeback effort run out of time. Kenzie McEachern-Sheilds, Victoria Okeke and Avery Plant all found the end zone in the comeback effort.

Next up is the second installment of the Battle of Alberta this season. The Pandas won the opener back on Aug. 30, 29-17, a game that saw newcomer Kaitlin Tettah-Wayoe have a break-out performance with for four tries - three in the second half - for the big win for Alberta.

The Dinos have a week off before closing out the regular season Oct. 10 with a home game against Lethbridge at Hellard Field.
