Dinos Football (0-1)
Friday, Sept. 5 | Calgary vs. Manitoba | McMahon Stadium | 7:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
In a rarity that hasn't occurred since 2012, the Calgary Dinos football team will open the season with two consecutive home games as they welcome Manitoba to McMahon Stadium Friday night for a 7 p.m. contest.
The Dinos are coming off a narrow 43-36 overtime loss to the reigning Hardy Cup champions Regina in last Friday's opener. The Dinos trailed 24-10 at the break, but saw their youthful offence start to string things together in the second half, nearly pulling off the big comeback win.
Calgary's first-year quarterback David Jordan settled in nicely as the game went along, finishing with 238 yards passing and three touchdowns - all in the second half - as the future is bright with him and fellow rookie Jet Zakrzewski taking all the snaps at QB in the opener.
Next up is a showdown with Manitoba. The Bisons dropped their opener, 21-9, at UBC this past Thursday in new head coach Stan Pierre's debut. A season ago, the Dinos appeared to have knocked off then-undefeated Manitoba inside McMahon on the final play of the game, but the officials ruled the play in the endzone to be out of bounds for a 22-17 final.
Dinos Field Hockey (0-0)
Saturday, Sept. 6 | Calgary vs. UBC | Hawkings Field | 11:00 AM
Sunday, Sept. 7 | Calgary vs. UBC | Hawkings Field | 11:00 AM
The Dinos field hockey season gets underway this weekend with the first two of four straight home games to start the year. Calgary welcomes UBC to Hawkings Field for a pair of games both Saturday and Sunday, with both slated to start at 11 a.m.
With a full year now officially under her belt, Calgary's second-year head coach Jenn Beagan is excited about this year's squad. Despite having just five players on the 22-player roster that are third-years or older, there is an added energy and attitude within the team so far this season.
One of those returning veterans is fourth-year defender Isabella Green, who has been named a First Team All-Canadian each of the past two seasons after being named the U SPORTS Rookie of the Year in 2022.
Calgary opens up against UBC, who finished second in the three-team Canada West standings a season ago with a 5-1-2 record.
Dinos Men's Soccer (3-1)
Saturday, Sept. 6 | Calgary vs. Mount Royal | McMahon Stadium | 2:15 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Following a six-point road weekend, the Dinos men's soccer team returns home for just a single game this weekend - its annual derby with rival Mount Royal. Kickoff is set for 2:15 p.m. Saturday from McMahon Stadium following the women's match.
It's been a strong start to the season for Calgary, who sit at 3-1 through four games for second place in the Canada West Prairie Division standings. The team ahead of them in the early standings comes to campus Saturday for the Dinos' first true home game of the year at McMahon Stadium, as their first two games were played across town at Shane Homes West Soccer Dome, before travelling to Lethbridge and Saskatoon this past weekend.
Calgary has also already shown of its scoring depth so far this season. After Owen Antoniuk netted all five goals on the opening weekend, it was Soliman Aria scoring a pair this weekend, while brothers Gianmarco Plenzik and Joey Plenzik both tallied one goal each in the pair of wins this weekend. Hany Shafie was also big in the net for his first clean sheet in Sunday's 1-0 win over the Huskies, making an incredible save on a one-on-one chance from point blank range on the last play before the final whistle.
The Dinos and Cougars battled to a pair of 1-1 draws in regular-season action a season ago.
Dinos Women's Soccer (2-0)
Saturday, Sept. 6 | Calgary vs. MacEwan | McMahon Stadium | 12:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
Sunday, Sept. 7 | Calgary vs. Alberta | McMahon Stadium | 12:00 PM | Watch | Live Stats
The Dinos women's soccer team hosts two games from McMahon Stadium this weekend for its first home action of the season, starting Saturday. It's an early heavyweight showdown in Saturday's home opener as MacEwan comes to campus before taking on Alberta on Sunday. Both games are set to kickoff at noon.
It was an incredible start to the season for the Dinos, spearheaded by the offensive outburst from Brooke Batty. The second-year forward who was limited to just six games a season ago erupted for an eye-popping six goals in Calgary's opening two wins on the road at Regina and Saskatchewan. Batty tied the program record with four goals in a game in the opener before netting two more in Sunday's 2-0 win in Saskatoon. Remarkably, Batty's shooting percentage is still a perfect 1.000 percent as her six goals came on just six total shots, and both her goal and points (seven) totals are by far the early leaders in both Canada West and U SPORTS.
Calgary will now square off with its provincial rivals from the north this weekend in what has proven to be one of the more challenging back-to-backs on the year. Despite plenty of overall success in both series, the Dinos have not won both games in a MacEwan-Alberta weekend since Sept. 11-12, 2021.
Dinos Rugby (0-1)
Saturday, Sept. 6 | Calgary at Victoria | Wallace Field | 2:00 PM MT | Watch
Calgary's rugby squad hits the road for the first time this season, traveling to Victoria for the annual Jenny Vincent Memorial Game Saturday at 2 p.m. MT from Wallace Field.
The young Dinos showed a lot of grit in nearly earning a comeback win over Alberta in the season opener before coming up just short in the 29-17 opener.
This year's schedule does once again see the Dinos head West to take on Victoria. However, that is the only game on the docket this weekend as a schedule change has removed the traditional two games in four days paired with UBC, as the Thunderbirds will come to Calgary for their first ever conference regular season game next weekend.
Saturday's game also marks the 15th edition of the annual Jenny Vincent Memorial Game, remembering the life of Jenny Vincent, who coached both programs and was the driving force behind obtaining varsity status for the Dinos women's rugby program.
